I'm putting this behind a cut in case any of you haven't seen the latest Avengers trailers but it isn't really spoilery.
However, it was Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark/Iron Man) who convinced Marvel Studios to bring back Pepper for The Avengers as he sees her as a vital part of the progression of his character. "When we were in the first of several iterations of the storyline, the only thing I was sure about was that Tony Stark needed backup." He added: "I said to Joss and Kevin, ‘We really need Pepper to be involved in some way.’ I felt like it’s been a while since we have seen Tony and Pepper and they have grown to be pretty close and it just makes sense that she would have some kind of influence over his decision to join ‘The Avengers’ team." -
source I don't have a .gif that accurately captures the excitement/tiredness I'm feeling right now. My head and my heart are all "WOO!" but my body is exhausted. But whatever, this is great news. I'm so heartened to hear that RDJ totally gets the importance of Tony and Pepper's relationship. The other day I happened to be reading an old review of Iron Man or Iron Man 2 that spoke of the Tony/Rhodey relationship being the emotional backbone of the movie and I was like "Bzuh?" I mean, I love Rhodey - both iterations - but their friendship never properly transitioned onto the screen. Pepper was his confidant/support system more so than Rhodey, whom he was often at odds in the first film. RDJ is totally right, it would have been weird for her not to show up at such an important point in Tony's life.
This week I expressed some of my reasons for loving Pepper in

great post about Pepper and femininity. I might write more about her again if I get the chance to do a rewatch because, seriously, Pepper is my girl. So happy we get to see more of her.
