If this fandom turns out to be 75% Newt/Gottleib-and-Raleigh/Chuck-basic-white-dudes-bickering-and-fucking and fails to deliver any decent Raleigh/Mako I will not be surprised but I will be disappointed.
Seriously, Raleigh and Mako were delicious. By not making Mako the love interest and instead crafting a friendship based on mutual respect and support Del Toro and co. have built the foundation for a great romantic relationship. That they both liked each other quickly and easily was such a refreshing change - sometimes I enjoy it when two clashing personalities provide the conflict for a relationship but as this movie showed it's not the only way. They still had problems thanks to their different pasts and world views but the bedrock of affection that they quickly established allowed them to deal with those issues without further bogging down the relationships with the tired tropes of belligerent UST.
I'm glad the movie left the future of the relationship open. If you want to believe that they were best friends forever more you can. If you want to believe that makeouts ensued in due course, the film didn't close the door on that either. And now I hope that fandom picks up both balls and runs around with them A LOT because there is so much potential. In most fandoms mind bonding would be a crazy AU - not this one! How much recall do they have over each other's memories when they aren't in the drift? The impression I got was that they feel each other's emotions while linked - could they pick up the emotions tied to memories? Outside of the drift if you recalled someone else's memory of looking at you, would you also register the accompanying emotions - concern, attraction, affection? Do you have access to a person's entire life or only what they remember themselves?
Damn. I had intended to be more coherent and less brain dumpy, because there are a bunch of other things I liked about this movie. The plot, the other characters (great, but NOT ENOUGH WOMEN), the world, the Australians (not actually played by Australians but almost convincing), the costumes. Might come back with more thoughts later and maybe even fic.
