Jessy's Fault

Dec 04, 2008 04:53

Shuffle your iTunes 30 times. Write down the song and artist, and who it reminds you of and why.

1. "Dawning of the Day" by Mary Fahl
I think of T'ra when I hear this song. I sent it to her once, and she remarked upon how awesome I was.

2. "Daredevil Theme (Blind Justice Remix)" by Mike Einziger
This doesn't actually remind me of anyone, but I remember going to the Minerva Theater in Maastricht, alone of a Wednesday afternoon, to go see the movie. I was disappointed even then.

3. "La Tristesse Durera (Scream to a Sigh)" by Manic Street Preachers
Jessi Stephens once wrote an entry about extreme familial irritation that reminded me of this song's title, and ever since then when I hear it I think of that entry.

4. "What You Feel" by Hinton Battle & Michelle Trachtenberg
This would have to be Jen Adamson, the most awesome Buffy fan-nut on the planet.

5. "Tonight, Tonight" by Smashing Pumpkins
Came on the radio after I got home from my first date with someone, and I named the next Livejournal entry after the song, after a fashion.

6. "Outkast" by 10 Gray Tuesdays
Reminds me of Lawson. No, really. Lawson in a sweaty t-shirt and shorts jumping off of a bar bench and nearly impaling himself on a mic stand. Whilst wearing a bandanna. And ROCKING THE BAR.

7. "Open Your Eyes" by Guano Apes
Niki will always be at the forefront of my thoughts whenever this song comes on. One day she and I will be able to rock out to it, German-style.

8. "White Rabbit" by Jefferson Airplane
I don't know if Chris remembers this, but one night he came to visit me at my home in Maastricht. We went to the Falstaff and got to talking. Jefferson Airplane came up, and we were in a shared, partially drunken, and somewhat high, fit of fanboi frenzy over Grace Slick. I waxed poetic about "White Rabbit." He said he didn't know the title. I called Gerry the bartender, and convinced him to play the song--on a weekend night, when all the students want to hear dance music. As soon as it began playing, Chris said, "Shit, man, I know this song!" and we drank more. Afterward, we waited outside for Gerry, to offer him in joining us partaking of the hashish, but he wasn't getting the clue through the locked door. We went back to my place and had a righteous time before passing out as the sun rose over the brick wall in the back terrace-garden.

9. "Never Be Mine" by Kate Bush
Whenever Kate Bush comes on, I think of Dana--the only porchie who shares my ardent adoration of the songstress.

10. "Tuesday's Gone" by Metallica
Emma. Ah, Emma, what was it we were doing? I have my regrets, but then I'm glad I have this mix tape to remind me of you. I still think of you often.

11. "Selling the Drama" by +Live+
One time while riding in the car, I was playing this song and my dad says, "I like this song. It's probably my favorite." I was so ecstatic at this, that often when I am not ruminating over the song itself, I remember that. He tried singing along, but got messed up with all the lyric changes. :D

12. "Now We Are Free (Maximus Mix)" by Hans Zimmer & Lisa Gerrard
Adelboden, 2002. Oli van Lanschot listened to this over and over and over on my discman. He was... in a mood to really appreciate dance music.

13. "One More Time" by Daft Punk
Niki, all the way. From end to end. Completely. She owns every Daft Punk reference I've got.

14. "The Pot" by Tool
No one in particular, but it does evoke for me a period in which I listened to the album an awful lot. And that's all y'all are getting out of me.

15. "Gluefoot" by Vic Chesnutt
Leo Svirsky borrowed this record from me while I was at Emerson, and, if I recall correctly, appreciated it greatly.

16. "Slip Away" by The Commitments
Gerry Nelissen of the Falstaff. He turned me onto Daniel Lemma, Jack Johnson, and The Commitments. Whenever I hear these Irish soulsters, I'm transported back to the Falstaff, or my living room, watching it on RTL5.

17. "I Will Get There (A Capella)" by Boyz II Men
This song was on one of the mix tapes I made for the carpool ride into school, with Maja and Kristen, my surrogate sisters. So, I remember Jack Frost, exhaust clouds, and knocks on the front door to wake me up. Sorry about those days, guys...

18. "Prologue" by Loreena McKennitt
Again, not so much a person, but a time. This time, I can be specific. During the first MUNISH of which I was a part, in 2002, I took along this album. Ludo and I were staying with a host family (the Secretary-General's family, no less), and we shared a room (incidentally, I remember Ludo was reading Robert Ludlum's Bourne books at the time). I let the host father burn the CD, since he enjoyed it so very much.

19. "Let It Dive" by ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead
I've listened to this song nearly obsessively ever since I bought the album when it came out. I can't ever let it play and finish just the once. I always have to repeat it once or twice more. I have many associations with this song, but the earliest has to be Lacey, as it was this album I was listening to when Metrobussed up from Arlington to Maryland to visit her at her work, an expedition which set certain things into motion, from which I have no regrets and bear no ill will.

20. "What's Going on?" by A Perfect Circle
For some reason, I always think of Mia when I hear this song. No clue why. There must be some deep-seeded association, but that's odd, since I haven't seen anyone from Maastricht since after this album was even released.

21. "All My Loving" by Jim Sturgess
Niki, Milissa, Hank, V... the list of people I saw this movie with is just too massive. I mean, there was also Dan and Josh Ridgeway and my mother... I saw the durn thing nine times in the theater, and again at home after Niki was beautiful enough to mail the DVD to me.

22. "White, Discussion" by +Live+
In equal turns, Emma and the porchies at large. Emma and I passed the time in Mrs. Morton's group after school by writing out lyrics from memory and showing them to each other, or listening to each other's music when we weren't required to pay attention. As for the porchies, well, the proof is in the lyric. "Look where all this talking got us, baby!"

23. "Margarita Chum" by Anouk
Reminds me of Shanna. We listened to this song once, preparing to go to Rocky Horror one cold Saturday night. Things were warmer then.

24. "Crazy in Love" by Snow Patrol
Manny Paiz is a big Snow Patrol fan, and got a hugely massive kick out of this when it played on my iPod over the sound system.

25. "Bring My Family Back" by Faithless
This song reminds me of myself and Joe driving at night, home from the LA. Good music with a good friend. What's better?

26. "De mooiste verliezers" by Bløf
Niki and I have a kind of teamwork that's pretty well established. The title means "the most beautiful losers."

27. "Like a Rolling Stone" by Anberlin
Jessy! JESSY! This was on the stereo when we driving back down to Richmond, before you played all that awesome indie go-go hardcore emo stuff.

28. "The Balcony Scene" from Franco Zeffirelli's Romeo & Juliet
We watched scenes from this version of R&J in Mrs. Herman's English class. We then watched all of Baz Luhrmann's R&J. Mrs. Herman ROCKS.

29. "Higher" by Creed
Bjørn and I both listened to a lot of Creed when playing Risk 2241 (if that's the right year), and reading Turtledove's novels.

30. "Heaven" by Bryan Adams
I'm not telling.

music, meme
