I don't get easily shocked, at this point, when it comes to injustice in the "justice" system (horrified, yes, but not shocked anymore) but this managed to do it ( Read more... )

Wow. That's worse than the other article I saw a few days ago in the NY Times. Which horrified my mom enough that she and I actually agreed on it. (I think it's the only thing involving children, education, and jail time that we agree on, at least so far.)

The US has been "detaining" immigrants (and their children of all ages) in private facilities for years.

We have a mutual friend whose brother is a leading civil liberties attorney in Luzerne County and is one of the people who filed a class action suit. He says what's been reported is just the tip of the iceberg.

I hope the reason the judges are pleading to what seem like lesser charges and getting only seven years is that they're cooperating in bringing down the people who paid them and anyone else involved. If not, well, seven years is far too short for intentionally wrongly imprisoning many minors. It's the sort of thing that leads the public to decide the criminal justice system is inadequate and to take matters into their own hands.
