My needs are simple: I want someone to point out to Governor Romney that emergency room care is not free, and that at least some people don't go there because they are worried about the cost.
The ER is not free, but who ends up paying for it is another one of those "fuzzy statistics" debates. According to Connance, a company offering "revenue cycle productivity solutions" to hospitals and healthcare providers, 75% of "self pay" individuals owing $500 or more end up paying nothing to settle the bill and hospitals are wasting money by even sending out the bills.

As for the role of the ER, I don't always agree with Krugman, but this is worth reading. "Wallet Biopsies" are very real.
