In your corner of the world, are people getting less and less tolerant?

I have a baby-boomer theory on that but too hungry for now, Ciao!

i feel like it hasn't changed much in recent years, but it's generally become more and more tolerant here. i'm thinking less of race here (this is a very, very white state) and more of other things, like sexuality.

If Sarah Palin gets elected, maybe Vermont could secede and I wouldnt have to drive all the way to New Brunswick.

I know that I get less and less tolerant of idiots the more tired and stressed I am, and the more I have to deal with them... *whistle*

(Where "idiots" are authors/academic editors I work with, who have doctorates/are professors, but who seem to wilfilly refuse to refuse emails and reply to what's actually written in them, rather than people with substandard intelligence... Getting annoyed with people who genuinely can't help things? Not something I condone! Getting annoyed with people who really can??? Still better to avoid it, but understandable if you can't always.)

And here I am thinking I'm all pc and tolerant and all and you throw idiots into the mix. :/ Back to the introspection drawing board.

I suspect my 'idiots' and Janet's 'assholes' are really part of the same group - people who are just completely inconsiderate of others, purely as a result of personality flaws. Those who blithely create extra work by ignoring simple, common-sense instructions that they are more than capable of following; those who expect everybody else to drop whatever they are doing for them as a matter of course; those who refuse to modify their behaviour to something more socially acceptable (be that sitting on busy public transport sprawled over 3+ seats, playing music loudly, having shouted conversations at length in public...), and their kith...

I think people have always been like that here, but the internet has made it more apparent. I grew up in California in schools that are diverse and open. I remember when I first started going on CoS forums, I was shocked to see how intolerant other areas of the US were.

maybe you hit the nail here, maybe people haven't changed much but media are willing to provoke controversies just to sell copies and that is why I find the media in my corner are all turning into yellow tabloids and focussing on any trivial event and turn it scandalous thing we shouldn't tolerate.

The most popular newspaper here always have headlines on how outrageous are the government expenses, or how citizens don't get what is due to them (???). I know there are unacceptable things, but it remains that the Canadian, quebecer or montrealer authorites are doing a decent job.

I think they're just more people around. And common sense has always been a rarity.
