Damn, I love XKCD!

We leave for Burning Man in 5 days. I am the least prepared I have ever been at this time. And probably the most excited. I've been unable to talk coherently about anything else for at least the last week.

Was at UW last week for the first time in a year or so, meeting with the team whose work we are funding. Steve Banks, who I have known since the 7th grade, and who I haven't seen in almost 10 years, is a member of that team. My boss's face, when I walked in and gave one of our researchers a big hug, was priceless. We spent a very happy hour on the Bomber patio with a beer, catching up and getting birthday mugs (since it was the 6th of August, and my birthday was the 4th, Steve's the 8th). Also had a chat with James. He's not a very happy camper right now. Final outcome of that day was an introduction from the dean of computing to a couple of the security researchers at UW, one of whom is a friend of very many friends, that I've met many times before, and whose brain scares me a lot. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Ian Goldberg actually could kill you with the power of his mind.

Last weekend was really odd. My brother's birthday was alright, but two hours of talk about a toddlers bathroom habits really wasn't doing it for me. And every time my brother tried to actually talk to me about something, my mother interrupted with more talk about Lily. 8 straight hours on one topic was a bit much.

The Beer Festival. Where it poured rain for the first 5 hours and 15 minutes and we trudged through muddy fields to drink beer and Darcy attained some groupies. We were standing outside the Trafalger Brewery tent and these two girls come up and start yelling "You're that guy! Hey it's that guy!" Turns out they had been talking to Darcy last year, had taken a picture of him, and she still had it on her phone. Since he was wearing the same shirt (it's hideous. He's only allowed to wear it once a year at the Beer Festival) they remembered him. He started calling them his "groupies" and got hit. We got 45 minutes of beautiful sunshine right at the end of the day.

Spent Darcy's birthday on Wednesday celebrating my birthday with a few of the crew from SIMS. A lovely evening at the Beer Bistro with James and Jen and Laurie. It was a really relaxing time, and I'm very glad to have kept such good friends after leaving SIMS.
