"Oh, shit, the gays want to get married- we can't have that!" is plastered all over the headlines.
The reason why this is all over the news is because stuff like Rowanda is soo far away...while it may be pathetic America is all about itself, and only when it is suitable do we intervene. Another reason that the GAYs are all over is because it is such and easy political topic to grasp...moral issues are always like that...it is a "smoke & mirrors" trick to divert the "real" attention from issues they don't want Americans involved in, i.e. Rowanda...
The reason France is in the headlines is because it plays to American's distaste for the French...So in general America is a land of Hypocrits...but I could be just another "jaded" political science major who sees what the real political system is like, and not the pretty little "free gift with purchase" everyone seems to see. Call me Queer **hehe** but yet again I depart from "normal".

it could be b/c you see the diversity that is not only America, but the world and realize that most people are stuck in places where billy-jo's cow giving birth is the big story @ eleven. You have access to so much knowledge and are drinking it up. You are in a place that speaking your mind, no matter what, is ok. YOu are in a place where there are not 80 bajillion Frat boys, who are so queer its not even funny, assimilate because they want to be liked. You for the first time have as I said below, have stopped regarding the "shadows" as the truth and begun to see the light...you my friend have become a true "free thinker" you have come into what no doubt the "Twenty Pearls" hoped every Sorror would...a truly intelligent and independent woman willing to fight to change the future. Congratulations my dear, and take heed because not everyone reaches such a point! I <3 JD! You truly are The Best Thing Since Sliced Bread
I downloaded it, but I still haven't watched it. It's one of those movies where you tell yourself you have to be in the mood, but you know you'll never be in the mood to watch a movie like that.
republicans and democrats rarely are different when it comes to foreign policy, especially towards non-white, poor countries. How many times have you heard a democrat rage against US policy toward Israel?
I finished reading anne frank's diary last night, and I was thinking the same thing--this stuff happens all the time, all around the world. We'll send billions in military aid to certain countries, but we won't even let companies sell generic drugs to poor countries. We'll build tons of museums for the Holocaust, but never pressure Japan to recognize their WWII massacres. And how much have we spent in Iraq in life and money, and yet we ran out of Somalia after 18 or so of our troops died.
must be positive, must be positive, must be positive...
I have so many emotions right now. I guess it's because you grow up believing that the world is such a wonderful place, love makes the world go round, blah blah blah... you're just always so protected from the real world until you see something like this and you just get so angry, because you feel like all your hopes and dreams have been deflated and your lifestyle is forever changed. It's difficult to be positive when you know the truth. It's like the analogy of The Cave (Plato? Aristotle? I don't remember). It's hard to have faith in humanity again. It's hard to be happy when you know so many people around you are suffering. Although when you see the people in those situations, they are hopeful. They are the Anne Franks, the Nelson Mandelas, the Oskar Schindlers. We can learn a lot about the human experience from them.

It's like the analogy of The Cave (Plato? Aristotle? I don't remember).
The Allegory of the Cave is from Book VII of Plato's Republic
However, this situation is like Plato's The Allegory of the Cave, and here's why:
Plato believed that the world revealed by our senses is not the real world but only a poor copy of it, and that the real world can only be apprehended intellectually.
So in this, you are in some manner beginning to see the world not through senses, you have begun to see it vis à vi intellectual thought, which was brought on by your having watched the film.
Then there is Plato's idea that knowledge cannot be transferred from teacher to student, but rather that education consists in directing student's minds toward what is real and important and allowing them to apprehend it for themselves
Here too you have broken from what is said, and displayed for mass consumption, into actually facing what is "real and important". You have turned your mind from the "shadows" to the light asking why does this happen?

I understand completely where you are coming from, I am in "The Holocaust; A Historical Perspective" this semester and this is the most trying and difficult class I have ever taken. Not because it is hard academically, quite the contrary it is rather easy, it is hard b/c I have to read book after book about Auschwitz (and other camps) and all the horrible things that are the Holocaust. We also have to delve into the occurences of Genocide now...and that is even worse, b/c @ least the Nazis pretended that the Jews were not going to die all the way to the gas chambers...now adays the groups singled out know that they are going to die without a doubt. I have nightmares about being a prisoner of the camps, and I look at all the Jewish friends I have and simply cry. I cannot believe that someone was so callous and purely evil to think that this was good. It is hard to be positive, but we must. We must! Negativity leads to more negativity, and vice versa...in essence Embrace it, but do not allow it to "own" you, sing in your head "

Its funny you posted this...I just finished watching "Im Still Here" on MTV and it pissed me off that no promo was run for the program! Even 60 years later people still want to turn their heads.
I seriously am disgusted with Americans when it comes to this crap! They always want someone to help in their time of need, but yet they can do NOTHING for anyone else...selfish bastards!
But yeah, if the movie is anything like the book I read...oh God! I really want to see it and I think after this post I'll buy it when I get my DVD supply next week! Thanks!
