smells like spring

When I walked outside today, I could tell that it was spring from the smell of the air. There's nothing like spring air. It's fresh and you feel that things are growing. It also kind of smelled like hotdogs...it seems that my new neighborhood loves to cook out, no matter the time of day. But, that's cool ( Read more... )

you bring up a very interesting point about what the media chooses to fixate on, sometimes creating a problem where none exists.

someone made an interesting comment in the "social problems" class i TA for yesterday: Columbine was her freshman year of college and they had a spate of locker bombings (M-80s in lockers), as it seemed many high schools did. all of the "freak" kids who wore black and hung out in a certain area of the schoolyard were, in her words, "paraded" through the principals office and photographed and documented. all the while the actual perpetrators--members of the football team--went unmolested.

Scary, isn't it? Everyone was suspicious of the kids that dressed different. But, in the years after Columbine, while other school shootings occurred, people didn't spend as much time dissecting the identities of the kids and what made them distinct (I think).
