Landis was pretty much coked out of his gourd and shooting in the middle of the night with two unpaid local children, violating a lot of child labor laws. He kept ordering the chopper to go lower while he was having his pyrotechnicians set off huge explosions on the hills directly around it. Helicopters are hard enough to fly on the calmest day, and this is when Landis learned why so many choppers went down in the real Vietnam War.
He got away with incredibly negligent manslaughter and it's awful.
