Thick and heavy with fever, muted by pills and syrups that combined to dull the throb of his head and arrest his nausea, Gerard was experiencing a feeling he thought was lost with his belief in Santa Claus. It welled in his chest, ached. The Christmas lights that adorned his tree glistened not with the malignant barbarousness of consumerism, but with hope, happiness.
“I love you,” he fumbled onto the keypad of his phone, found Bert’s number, clicked send.
When Gerard next woke, the lights on the tree were out. There was a hand on his forehead, cold and firm.
