"Andrea, don't you dare put that sand in your mouth!"  Or, "If you slide down that banister one more time, you're going to break your hip!"

Well Mom, I've got news for you: sand is tastier that it looks, and who breaks a hip, of all things, while sliding down a banister?  In fact, I'm guessing that unless you slide upside down, it's pretty ( Read more... )

The Sioux method was to let children burn themselves on fire. Once the child burned itself, it understood never to touch a flame again. The problem is that we live in a society where we won't let kids ten yards from the house due to the hordes of paedophiles lying in wait at every family's front gate, so the idea of letting kids be kids with cuts and grazes is a pretty foreign one.

That's exactly what I'm talking about!

I mean, I wouldn't be the kind of (accident prone) person I am today if it hadn't been for all of those scrapes and bruises when I was younger. The kids I feel really sorry for are the ones who are literally attached to the end of a leash. You know, the ones who have those straps of material strapped to their wrists, or a harness around their chests. Those are the ones who won't even be able to go to the bathroom without somebody going with them when their 17.

I think that parents have to trust their kids. To a certain age, it's alright for a parent to be concerned about their child when they go to out to play at the park or the back yard, but at a certain point parents need to let go, and let their child explore and learn on their own.

I wouldn't go as far as fire, but parents need to relax a little bit or pretty soon their going to have a bunch of 30 year old babies on their hands, and then who will be the ones complaining?
