Maybe it's the reminder that Wellesley students are focused, talented (and multi-talented, judging from the number of presentations by students majoring in a field unrelated to their current research!), articulate, and confident

Err. You wouldn't have been too impressed by Kim and I, then, as we headed off to see a pesentation on "The Moon, Menses, and [something else beginning with 'm']" just because we thought it would be a good laugh. Man...Whenever I get around motivated people, my most horrible instincts just kick right in.
There's totally nothing wrong with going to presentations for the sake of laughing :) My coworker and I went to an interactive math presentation for that purpose (and because one of our workers was part of the group). It ended up being quite fun, actually ... we learned how to use an abacus!
I almost felt bad for taking such a large slice of the baked brie ... but then I saw the second enormous wheel of it on the other side of the bread basket and abandoned all twinges of guilt.
There were also spring rolls, sushi, chicken trumpets, baklava, olives, and chips/salsa/guacamole. And those were just the 4pm hors d'oeuvres ;)
Aah, free food. I went to the opening of an envelope-- I mean a common room -- at my college the other day just because I knew it would obviate the need to buy dinner. Mmmm... mini-quiches...
I also just got back from a reception at which there was a rather meagre offering of canapes, but was chatting with a grad-student buddy of mine, who was eyeing the caterer with the barbequed chicken with a wild glint in his eyes, willing him to come to us, and willing the senior faculty not to eat the remaining two pieces... mmm... barbequed chicken...
He also said that he wanted to attend a reception some day and have someone actually open up a can of peas and plunk it on a tray. This made me laugh, and since we were talking about free food (mmm... free food...) I thought I'd share!
What is it about free food, I wonder? It's so much more tempting and alluring than any other variety ... perhaps it's why I love gardening so much. (Not that that food is free, but I don't have to pay to pick it and pop it in my mouth.)
Ulgh. My sense of humor is faulty, for it the thought of canned peas glistening on a caterer's tray merely nauseates me. I shall definitely think of it the next time I pick up a doughnut before colloquium.
Which may be a good thing; I eat too much sugar. But all the free food is sugar...

The brie was awesome. The semi-indigestion that the overall gluttony inspired was, however, not so spectacular (but worth it).
