when I found the meme there was no link for the Big Read, or source listed for the list of books. but I assume they are referring to this Big Read, which I've seen at my local libraries in the past two years, as well as in the paper. I am all for any program that helps raise awareness and interest in reading. ;)

If you google "Big Read", you also come across the BBC's book list, which contains many of the same books, but in a different order. A side by side comparison of the lists might be interesting, for someone with way too much time on their hands... ;)

P.S. Have to say, I agree with your sentiments about Possession. I recommend The Conjurer's Bird as taking a similar concept but eliminating the poetry. It therefore comes in at a third of the length but is nonetheless highly entertaining.

I'm so surprised that no one seems to have been forced to suffer through Heart of Darkness. For me, it was once in high school, once in college, twice in grad school. That book is like a curse - what have you all done to avoid it?

I'd second this, but Rebecca had never read Jane Eyre until very recently...But if B loved Wuthering Heights, I think she'd dig Jane Eyre even more.
