My thoughts on the Wilson episode

Dec 11, 2009 03:56

The day came and the day passed, and with the perspective of several days in between I can now objectively say that the "Wilson" episode was one of the most brilliant things that happened to me this year, if not actually the most brilliant.

Few things I wanna say about the episode:

1) Wilson in almost every scene @_@
Usually, when watching any regular House episode, I'm looking for Wilson scenes as if I was looking for gold (or rather oil in many episodes). With this episode I didn't know what to do! I was afraid to blink in case I would miss one second of Wilson/RSL's utter brilliance!

2) Sleepy Wilson, frustrated Wilson and House singing about Wilson's hot bodaaay 8D
I swear I'm gonna cry if House and Wilson stop living together, because it will mean the end of seeing sleepy Wilson every few episodes, and also seeing Wilson doing stuff around his place, it's just so perfect.
Frustrated Wilson? We get this one pretty often lol, but somehow it's always hilarious, specially when he's frustrated by something annoying that House is doing x)

"Well I guess it would be nice if I could touch your body, I know not everybody, has got a body like you, baaaaaaaaayyyybeeeeeeeeehhhh"
Of course the Hilsons interpreted this as House serenading Wilson and of course Huddies interpreted this as House thinking about Cuddy, when it probably has no deeper meaning than House singing something fun and melodic for the fun of it and with the plus of annoying Wilson (I bet he loves frustrated/annoyed Wilson as much as we do ^^). But my personal favourite interpretation is the one that srsly_yes pointed out somewhere in the House_Wilson comm. House sings "not everybody has a body like you" while looking at Wilson and it's interesting looking at the events of the episode, Tucker guilting asking Wilson for a part of his liver, going about it almost lightly and demanding, and House freaking out over that. It's a nice interpretation of how important House considers Wilson's body to be, I really liked thinking about it.

3) Wilson interacting with patients/friends
I have to admit I'm a tiny bit dissapointed that after hearing sooooo many times about how people thank Wilson for telling them they are going to die we didn't get one scene of that in an episode where we got to see Wilson as a doctor 24/7.
But it was still awesome to see Wilson interacting with patients. Predictably enough, he's always caring and attentive to their needs, he makes sure to make comforting physical contact with them all and to bond with them all, always getting way too emotionally close.
This got me thinking about what House said "I can handle it when things go wrong. You can't". I'm sure it must be easy for House to handle the deaths of his pateints when he barely sees them at all, and I'm also sure that it tends to be harder on Wilson because he apparently gets closer to patients than even regular doctors do. But Wilson always has to handle things going wrong because he's an oncologist, therefore he has to deal with many patients dying, so how can House's statement be true?
I got more the impression that Wilson was having trouble handling it because he was friends with the guy and 'the family' , and yes House made the half-joke of "they're all dying, they're all your friends" which definitely has some truth in it, but even Cuddy pointed out to Wilson that it wasn't a good idea to treat friends, if Cuddy felt the need to point that out it must mean that Wilson was more friends with Tucker than any regular patient.
Also, even though Wilson was clearly having a hard time with the idea of the impending death of his friend, as it would be expected of any friend, it seemed to me like he was accepting and dealing with it. The thing got really problematic and difficult for Wilson to handle when Tucker actually asked Wilson for a part of his liver, even throwing a bit of guilt when asking for the favour. Wilson didn't offer it himself and it didn't look like he has planning to, but when Tucker asked for it, even if he had left the guilt out of his speech, with Wilson being who he is and the guy being his friend, there was no way Wilson was gonna say no.
So yeah, my point in here is that even though the many deaths in his profession seem to be taking a bit of a toll on Wilson lately, particularly evident in episode 7, I think that House was exaggerating when making his point (he does that a lot). Wilson usually deals even if it's difficult, episode Known Unknowns was the exception, not the rule.

4) Friendship or guilt?
Did Wilson donate his liver to Tucker out of friendship or out of guilt? The first option would be a very valid reason for Wilson to make the sacrifice, the second one would be further evidence of how screwed up Wilson really is. I'm thinking it's a bit of both, even though I have to admit that it scared me a little when Wilson said to Cuddy "and until I run out of excess organs why shouldn't I do everything I can to help (my patients)?". Yup, fucked up alright.

5) Wilson's opposing reactions to success
At the beginning of the episode, Wilson has a House momment and what's the first thing he does? Runs to look for House to brag about it. Later in the episode, Wilson diagnoses a cancer in remission because he noticed his pateint was depressed, both a coleague and his patient are impressed by that and yet he is totally modest about it, almost like he doesn't consider it a big deal at all. What's up with that?
The two explanations I came up with is that Wilson either wont brag or even show any pride about his successes in front of anyone else besides House, or he doesn't consider his own method of diagnosing (he made the diagnosing by noticing his pateint wasn't talking happily about his grandkids, he basically made it through caring) anywhere near as impressive or as cool as House's. The first option indicates something we already know about him, that he isn't really himself in front of anyone else besides House, while the second option would indicate that Wilson has low self esteem. Although, both can actually be truth at the same time.

6) "If you die, I'm alone". Heart-breaking! And sadly true, but isn't it the same for Wilson?
House's only friend is Wilson, while Wilson's closest friend is House but he does have other friends. But apparently none who will show up when he's gonna have surgery, the spot in the chair next to the bed is especially reserved for House.
The person Wilson wants when he's dying is the same as he wants when he's living, and I'm sure that the same goes for House. Going back to season 4, when House risked his life to try to save Amber, Cuddy was the one sitting next to him, holding his hand. I know a lot of people in here don't wanna hear this, but there is no doubt in my mind that House has strong feelings for Cuddy and vice versa. But things weren't cool with Wilson at that moment and House looked miserable at the end of Wilson's Heart, more miserable than he looks now that he can't have Cuddy. Cuddy is important to House, but she's not Wilson for House and I don't think she ever will be.
House is Wilson's irreplaceable person and Wilson is House's irreplaceable person, for both the good and the bad times. And right at this point in their lives, there is no one else they can rely on (no Amber or Stacy around). If either of them dies, the other one is all alone.

7) Wilson is a doormat and House is a hypocrit?
Wilson can be a bit of a doormat from time to time. But take a look at this episode, Wilson donates part of his liver to his friend not because the guy intimidated him into it, but because he guilted him into it. Wilson's doormat-cy tendencies tend to come more from his guilt, strong sense of responsability and strong sense of property rather than inability to stand up for himself.

"Don't be a doormat, Wilson", "You willfully ruined my food and have taken over my living room because you already think I'm a doormat!"
Everyone has some brand of hypocricy in themselves, and House's comes from some of his words vs his actions towards Wilson.
It's not the first time that this point has been made. I remember in the episode "Games" from season 4, when Wilson gives a guy a death sentence thinking he has terminal cancer and it turns out the guy didn't have cancer at all and Wilson wants to pay him money because obviously he feels guilty about it. So House and Wilson argue and House says "I'm trying to teach you that everyone is out for theirs. You might as well keep yours." and Wilson retorts "And lend it to you?". House critizises Wilson for being a self sacrificing idiot and a doormat, apparently tries to push Wilson into quitting this tendency, and yet he's many times the very first one to take advantage of this (what he considers to be) weakness in Wilson's character. And House himself said so on ep 7, as well, that he takes advantage of Wilson's sense of responsability and property (AKA doormat-cy in House-language).
I think House totally means it when he tries to look out for Wilson so that others don't take advantage of him, but his very own self-centered and self-interested tendencies many times lead him to do exactly what he tries to protect Wilson from. Complicated relationship, huh? x)

8) A table is a table ................................ what? =S
I got a bit confused with that line, and it was used 3 (or rather 2 and a half) times. I think I got it on the rewatch though, but let me know if I'm wrong.

House: Doubling your patient's chemo dose is stupid.
(...)
Wilson: It's exactly what you would do.
House: I'm me, you're you.
Wilson: .............. And a table is a table.
This one I got it the first time I watched it. Wilson is basically saying that House is making no sense stating obvious facts (I'm me, you're you) and if he means something deeper he should elaborate for Wilson to understand, which is what House does next.

House: Surprise! Bad things happen to people who are sick, doesn't make you responsible!
Wilson: Oooh, not legally. Ethically. Ethically!
House: A table is a table.
Wilson says that he's not legally but rather ethically responsible, and I understood what House said as if he were saying "same shit", meaning that in this case the legal and ethical responsability are the same, so Wilson still shouldn't be made responsible for the situation.

Wilson: You can't change a table.
House: Actually, you can. You just need a (something) of paint and the guts to use it.
Um.......... is it me or is House actually saying that people can change? If he is, then wow! Mayfield really did miracles with this man x)

9) House showing up when Wilson was having surgery and staying by him after it
This is easily House's biggest gesture of love this season. Which got me thinking, last week's episode he faked being in love with Cuddy (even if it is true, he was lying at that moment) to screw up her relationship. This week's episode he struggles to get over his fear of loosing Wilson in order to be there with Wilson in a difficult time. Which is the true love in here?
When Wilson started going out with Amber, House screwed around with them as well, but it seemed mostly because he was trying to figure out their motives for going out. House wanted to make sure that Amber wasn't just using Wilson to somehow get back at him and he wanted to make sure that Wilson wasn't falling in his usual pattern with women. Once House realized House realized Amber was good for Wilson and she was making Wilson happy, he pretty much backed off, even if it meant that he wouldn't get his 24/7 Wilson time (can't blame him for not being willing to give it up lol). Like Wilson said, House was being kind of self-sacrificing.
But now with Cuddy, he kind of slipped back to his old self, being completely selfish and not really caring about what was the best for Cuddy or what would make her happy, only trying to ruin her relationship. I know House has strong feelings for Cuddy, but his actions towards her don't look to me like having her best interests at heart :/
And now we got episode 10, with House admitting that he was checking out all of Wilson's cases because he was worried about him, House observing every step in the Tucker case trying to avoid disaster, House trying to talk Wilson out of donating part of his liver to someone that House apparently considered to be underserving of it, House being genuinely scared for Wilson's health and life, and House staying right next to Wilson through all the recovery.
Interepret it as strong friendship, interpret it as something more than friendship, there is no doubt in my mind that Wilson is, and will always be, the person House loves the most.

10) Wilson screwing Cuddy over, funny or mean? I vote for both x)
Earlier on the episode, Wilson asked House if he was OK with the whole Cuddy/Lucas situation and House admitted that he wasn't, but also said that he was accepting the fact that there's nothing he could do and was trying to move on. Wilson approved, saying it's the adult thing to do and House, being House, pointed out that in that case being a kid was way more fun. And Wilson snorted, because there is a very buried conceiled trapped small part of Wilson, the fun part of him, that sees House's point crystal clear and strongly agrees, one of the parts of Wilson's personality and true nature that attracts him so inevitably to House, who is the ultimate fun. But Wilson tends to shut down this part of himself in favour of being the mature, responsible, goody two shoes guy 24/7. But there are these very rare occasions in which he allows himself the priviledge of that fun, and the end of this episode was one of those occasions.
Cuddy needs to be punished? I think that the only thing she did wrong was not tell House and Wilson about her relationship with Lucas, even though House was making strong steps foward in trying to win her over and Wilson was trying to push them together as well. She basically did not disencourage them at all (actually kind of flirted back at the 80s party), which was stupid, and House, having invested himself, got hurt. Don't think what she did is punish-worthy though, but Wilson was clearly just joking when he said that. His screwing with Cuddy is basically him standing up for his best friend, even if his best friend is not necessarily the one who's right or completely innocent. There was also the point made that Cuddy is Wilson's friend, but House is Wilson's BEST friend, he wanted to make clear whose side he was gonna take, House is always Wilson's priority.
So to me, what he did to Cuddy was mean and childish, but funny and exactly what Wilson needed at that moment. I wont blame Cuddy if she bitches on him for it on the next episode, but I'll still be happy that he did it and hope he is too :P

11) Which brings me to the next issue. Baby steps?
What do you guys think this means exactly? Is this a one time thing or is this going for the character development route?
Back in season 4, Amber was a wake up call for Wilson. In the episode "Living The Dream" particularly, she (with House's help too) forced Wilson to confront his self-desinterest issues. He admitted that he had always wanted a waterbed and yet he had made no effort to get one in his 20 years of adult-hood because apparently giving yourself the pleasure of having the bed that you want is not grown up style and is way too self-indulgent. Poor screwed up you, Wilson =/. It seemed like he made a few step fowards in this matter, but then Amber died, and we have seen few subtle clues since then (that I'm actually not completely sure if they are indeed clues of character development) of him trying to keep what he learned from Amber in mind.
Is this what the baby steps are? Do you think we'll see more of these "baby steps" this season? I really hope so. I wouldn't trade Wilson's compulsively caring nature for anything and don't want him to change the complete core of his personality (whichever that is), but it's nice to see him making steps foward, even if at a turtle-slow pace, actually the turtle-slow pace is the thing that will make these steps possible without changing/ruining his character.

Ok enough deep shit, what else did I love?
* Wilson's assistant! She's so cool 8) (did we get her name at some point??)
* The grandkids of one of Wilson's patients painted Wilson's tie. I WANNA SEE THAT.
* Wilson in hunting outfit, FAILING at looking all macho. I love that he looks weird and out of place with a gun and a knife xD
* Wilson talking about german porn XD (look at the end of the post if you didn't get the joke)
* The team running around in the background, they look even crazier on the outside lol!
* Taub instantly raising his hand to take Wilson's file at the prospect of making House loose some money. ILU Taub <3
* Actually, it's James. I believe this is Wilson's version of giving the finger, either that or stealing your loft xD
* Wilson asking House to be there when he has surgery. I always love it when we get evidence of how Wilson needs House too :')
* Wilson as a patient, Cutest Thing Ever.
* Wilson in black. SEXEEEEEEEEEEH 8D

Basically, ALL THE EPISODE. WILSON WILSON FUCING WILSON. PERFECT PERFECT AND FUCKING PERFECT. I don't know if it's my favourite episode, but it's definitely in my top 5.

Also, for those of you who didn't get it and haven't heard/read about it yet, the explanation of two jokes in this episode:

First, when Wilson is hunting with his friend at the beginning, he says "So I should stop thinking about German porn", it's an inside joke that RSL mentioned in this interview
"Hugh and I have a joke of one day that I’ll be sick in the hospital dying of something, and basically I send him on a mission to get all the porn out of my house, that has been hidden in the basement, and he comes back with like boxes and boxes of porn, and I look up and say, “Where’s the rest? Where’s the German stuff?” That’s my joke with Wilson. I think he’s a dark guy."

Second, when Wilson said “I’m not here for an argument, House" and House retorted “No, that’s room 12A”. It's a Monty Python reference, check out the sketch to get the joke, it's really funny x)

Ok, rant over and now I'll try not to loose all sanity while waiting for episode 11, which, in case anyone doesn't yet, airs on the 25th of january. SHIT FUCK SHIT Dx

I leave you all with my new favourite smile in the world <3
