Laptop advice

My wife wants us to get a somewhat inexpensive laptop, mostly to be used during travel to surf the web, check email, and play a few games.  I was thinking something with an NVidia 8400G or GS, or ideally a 8600GT.  Screen of 14.1" or 15.4", 1 GB RAM (2 is nice, not necessary), 80-120GB HD, CD-RW/DVD-ROM is fine, etc.  Expected games to be played ( Read more... )

The NV drivers as downloaded from the NV website won't install on laptops. I guess the reason is that they want to strongly push support onto the laptop manufacturers. It's the same hardware sitting on the same bus.

You have two choices:

A) force the installation, or
B) go to some place like laptopvideo2go.com and get an updated INF (which is really the only thing blocking install)

Most of the games we'll be playing won't be the latest-greatest, so I'm hoping that the drivers thing will be a moot point in the long run.

I was tempted by that, and even running our games on Windows on a MacBook, it still just has the ATI Xpress1150 video... which I could get for a lot less on a boring Wintel/WinAMD box.
