I can totally relate. When Dan and I first moved to Hoboken (1996), there was this cool, cheap dive bar with darts and a great CD jukebox we'd go hang out in called Cryan's Exchange. [And it turns out that 3 or 4 years earlier it was supposedly an even cooler dive bar called Fabian's.] Sadly, sometime later (1999? 2000?) it changed hands again and ceased to be cool AT ALL. For fuck's sake ... it's now called McSwiggins. WTF is that about? How is that even allowed to happen? Yuck.
I cheer myself up knowing that, at the very least, Maxwells is still Maxwells, having recovered from its 1+ year blip as a microbrewery and sports bar. *Shudder* Thankfully the previous owner cared enough to buy it back from the sports bar people, or so the story goes.
