Perhaps the idea is that fandom is this fun little fantasy world where people have super powers and nobody's racist and everybody has threesomes

I think that's really the crux of it right there. I mean, when I wrote fic, I focus on characters/plot more than sex and even THAT is the minority wrt fic output.

I can't speak for all of fandom, but the issue for me is that when I'm reading/writing/whatevering these characters, I mostly interested in exploring their interactions in their own little bubble of each other? I mean, I'm conscious of the fact that, in 1962, America was segregated, homosexuality was considered a disease and could result in being committed/jail time, and women were still generally treated like crap. But I'm generally exploring something between these characters and adding all of the depressing social commentary starts to drift away from what I want to say. Every once in a while I WANT to address social commentary, in which case that sort of becomes the drive of the fic (see: my queer_fest fic in progress), but generally if ( ... )

I think it's fine if people just want to write fun fanfic or whatever, and I know I'm not as involved with fandom (or Captain America) as you or others are ( ... )

I feel like you should know that this entry sparked a conversation between Tara and myself that resulted in the plotting of a fanfic in which Steve finds out that Tony and Bruce are sleeping together and he just Does Not Get It, and says a lot of homophobic things, and then Pepper takes him aside (because Pepper is cool with Tony/Bruce) and like, explains the history of the gay rights movement and Steve still doesn't get it and talks about how "in my day, these thigns just weren't done, damnit", and then she finally gets him to come around by talking about gay kids who killed themselves because of bullying, and he makes an It Gets Better video except it's really awful and still kind of homophobic, but his heart is in the right place, and Pepper is like, THAT'S REALLY GREAT and then she deletes it but pretends to put it on youtube and tells him how many hits it's getting and how many people he's helping.

Also somewhere in there she has to give sex ed lessons to him.

Also Harry Potter and Katniss Everdeen join the avengers.

YES, good, please write that immediately.

Yesterday I spent six hours in the car with my brother and we spent like three of them just talking about ways Steve would inadvertently offend people.

You forgot the part where Steve sings Turn it Off.
(wtf I had to edit this because I originally called him Steven? Who is Steven? Steven Tyler? Pretty sure he'd be okay with Bruce/Tony.)

And also where Peeta makes cakes for the Avengers.
