"Deep Breath" cameo? Just maybe?

All right, I'll try to keep this part vague, but presumably the comments will contain spoilers ( Read more... )

No question in my mind--"Missy" is short for "Mistress." And "Mistress" is the feminine form of the word "Master." Also, she even looks like a combo of Delgado and Ainley. (Also, I love her allusion to the Doctor being her "boyfriend.")

Guys leaked scripts suggest no. It's a crazed fangirl, bc it was so superfunny when Supernatural did that.

A fangirl? Seriously?

Moffat needs to leave this show or I will.

When you say "suggests," how solid a suggestion are we talking about? No major spoilers, please--I don't do leaks--but I'd like to know if it will save me a lot of pain to cut out now and then go back and catch up once they've got a new writer. I can accept her as a new villain with no connection to past canon whatsoever, but a fangirl?

Talked to people about that, bc I too didn't read the scripts (I don't watch Moffat Who), and their consensus is actually vaguer than that, so maaaaaybe redacted? But there's a couple things it could be, and M is, /apparently/, less likely than aforementioned option or, er, someone else you know back again.

If the someone else I know is the someone else I'm thinking of, she would have opted for a different word than "boyfriend," so I think we're in the clear on that at least.

cannot imagine the master referring to the doctor as their "boyfriend", in all honesty...

i saw someone speculating about iris wildthyme, and it must be said that this character matches her style a bit more, but i doubt moff would bring a tertiary spin-off character into such a prominent role in the show. probably she's completely new (and hopefully not what was offered as spoiler above, not only because that sounds somewhat shit, but also because I WOULD LIKE TO BE ABLE TO WATCH THE SHOW WITHOUT BEING SPOILERED. fandom has been so good about the leaks, dammit!).

Yeah, I thought those lines were over-the-top too... but all they'd need is for the Doctor to accuse her of being delusional (addled from her recent brush with the Time War, probably) and voila, back into the realm of plausible deniability. And there are so many awkward over-the-top lines in this show lately, I feel like I'm justified in mentally screening out most of them ( ... )

But her name is MISSY. I mean, come ON.

we must remember that moffat is, if nothing else, a world class troll. :D

(remember that time RTD named a character in SJA "rani", just because it would throw fandom into a tizzy for MONTHS?)

That would indeed be world-class trolling, and of the worst sort--pretending you're about to give fandom something they want, only to snatch it away again. When will they learn that it's *supposed* to work the other way? You pretend you haven't got anything in the works and then wait, what's this here ( ... )

So consensus is that it's not the TARDIS then? I thought at first the Doctor had "saved" the robot in her virtual databanks since he was a cybernetic being. Missy is a little creepy for a TARDIS avatar, but if anyone is entitled to be creepily possessive over the Doctor it's her.

I don't think Moffat would disguise the Master as a woman. I just don't think he has that kind of gender flexible thinking.

Oh, I never even thought of that! You're right, of all the characters we know, the TARDIS is the only one for whom the "boyfriend" label (not to mention "he loves me so") currently make sense. It could even fit with the line "I like his new accent, I think I'll keep it." The Doctor is permanently hooked into the TARDIS translation circuit, meaning the TARDIS is probably capable of determining the accent people hear when he speaks. I've been fudging that line with the rationale that Simm's Master chose to be young specifically to mimic the Doctor, so it's not unreasonable that s/he would choose to mimic the accent too. But I admit that's a stretch ( ... )

Largely tangential, but did you know Moffat actually has written the one and only female Doctor in pseudo-canonical Who? His first contribution was writing the script for The Curse of Fatal Death. Of course, that's going back a long way, and the leap from 'this works as a punchline' to 'this works as a serious angle on the character' is, as usual, the sticking point. Still, I'm encouraged by the fact that most of the biggest Who fans I know seem to look at the idea of a female Doctor as only a matter of time these days.

I have watched the Curse of Fatal Death! I like it just fine but I am skeptical about characterization of a genderswapped Master. By "gender flexible thinking" I mean that Moffat writes women in an entirely different way than he writes men, and a female Master's primary character trait would be A WOMAN! rather than THE MASTER!

Also River Song is very close to how I envision a Moffat female Master already, plus more indiscriminate killing and minus the (open) declaration of love.

Haha, my opinion was just, "Missy is weird, man. What even. What even." (That and I thought about how a character named Missy was introduced as a love interest for Timmy on Fairly OddParents recently but... I don't think you care about that.) I only realized that she could be the Master when I checked the best enemies tag on tumblr. And I honestly don't know what I think of the idea.

Well, I'll be glad if she's the Master simply 'cause: SHIP. CANON. but other than that... I dunno.

I thought Tasha Lem was the Master earlier, and I don't know whether I was right or not about that, and I think that might be better than Missy being the Master... then again, I don't really know. Maybe Tasha Lem and Missy are the same character. Maybe they are the same character and that character is the Master. I have no idea.

Hold the phone, I know you from Tumblr! Hi! invisible_mirror here. (You may know me as the one who keeps following/unfollowing you. I like your stuff but I try to keep my dash activity down to a manageable level, so I unfollow and then catch-up binge periodically.)

:D Hi!

And yeah, I definitely remember you from Tumblr, now that you said who you are. I just assumed that the following/unfollowing was the result of the Tumblr glitch in which Tumblr unfollows people without your say-so and they happen to be people you don't wanna unfollow so you refollow them. Don't worry. This is okay too.
