Personality: Maes tends to lean toward humor than the more serious tones some of his fellow military men may take up, and because of that he carries a hefty amount of comedical scenes from the show. At the same time, the happiness and safety of his family and friends is critical to him, and his job often allows that serious side of his to peek out for a bit.
He loves being helpful to people, often giving advice to those who are in need of it (Ed and Al, mainly). His mindset is working for not only himself, but for Roy and the others. That is his biggest focus other than family--to push Roy to the top so that change may finally occur. He's eccentric to say the least, and often very emotive, though he doesn't necessarily show any worry or anxiety for the sake of the others around him.
His job is a dark one, and he tries to make the best of it with a little fun. In the end, being helpful is his thing. This also means getting those around him into danger is a clear no-no, proven when he fires his assistant to protect her from some shocking information he uncovered.
He's best known for being an obsessive father and loving husband--he won't hesitate to whip out a picture of Elicia or Gracia to shove in the faces of anyone in the general vicinity. In the end it is also his greatest weakness, as he is killed because he freezes at the sight of Envy as his wife. Even his last words were of his girls.
Hughes can definitely be considered a workaholic, sometimes so engrossed in his work that he even falls asleep on top of it--it keeps him out at long hours and makes it hard to have a few nights at home with the family. Even so, he's dedicated to the point where danger could lie just around the corner. And even though he seems to always be dilly-dallying around his job, he complains of having too much work to do; perhaps just as a way to bug Edward and Roy.
Speaking of bothering, it seems to be his life's goal to troll people until their very will is shattered. Teasing and flustering a person is on his list of things to-do, and it's typical of him to make someone feel awkward or embarrassed--or make someone RAGE (i.e. Mustang).
But he's clearly very supportive of the others and, to him, dedication to his work is dedication to his friends.
