[Filtered from anyone who's a drone or AN ICKY MAYOR OR POLICE OFFICER OR MILKMAN. Or at least hoping.]

[20 minutes of Elicia and grocery shopping and work at the office and Roy needing a wife later--]

... Aaaall right, so none of that was the reason I called in. I just want to make sure I'm extra careful in case they're trying to tap the phone-lines ( Read more... )

So you think we should do a filter like this? I didn't think about that before.

...But I do think even they'd get bored with you talking on and on like that.

Yep, that sort of filter! I don't know if it does any good, but it couldn't hurt to be cautious, no?

...Though I guess my rambling would probably get to 'em first. Which is definitely a good thing! It's how I typically operated back home when I had some secretive information to dish out... I didn't normally talk for 20 minutes, but I guess I'm chipper today!

Hmmm... Talking a bunch to get others to stop paying attention...

[And suddenly, a devious grin! It's probably good that Hughes can't see the expression he just inspired on the Homunculus' face. She tucks this new piece of advice in the back of her mind for future use.]

What else did you do to keep stuff secret?

Hmmm, well, I didn't really have to keep too much secret, but codes typically work pretty well, or notes to decipher at a future date. Y'know, the usual sort of banter when it comes to secrecy!

They're like America and Russia. No way you can filter it away from them.

Maybe, but it's worth trying, right?

Why, thank you! It's nice to see my work is a little appreciated.

Any information about the Smith's you could offer, by the way?

In my time here, I've never heard anything about Mr. Smith, or seen him do anything unusual in particular.

Then I'm even more suspicious of him! Don't you find it strange that his wife and two kids have shown so much curious behavior, but he's been so quiet?

It is a little curious, though sometimes it is best to just let sleeping dogs lie.

But sleeping dogs can't lie there forever, you know! It's bad for their health.

[Ema has been listening and taking notes!]

Concerning the filters... I wouldn't be surprised if the mayor, Grady, or this milkman character were able to listen to our phone conversations filtered or not. Still, you're right about at least posting a filter for them--it's better than nothing at all.

You wouldn't happen to be Maes Hughes, would you? Major General Armstrong suggested I get in touch with you.

That is true, precautions are always a good thing! If that fails, one could also pretend to be calling about an entirely different topic and switch it up in the middle; that, too, might be a fruitless effort, but it's still worth trying after all the successive failures~!

Aah, that I am! The Major General told you about me?

Maybe we should work on developing a code...? [Although Ema's not sure they could develop a code complex enough to include everything that would need to be communicated over the phone lines.]

She mentioned you when I told her what I do for a living. Back home, I'm a detective who specializes in investigating scientifically. She said I might be of help to you.

[After a few beats, she realizes she's forgotten to mention something important:] My name's Ema Skye, by the way.

Ah, yes, the best way to use codes is to indicate time, places, and people through code! Normally, I'd prefer personal meetings over talks over the phone--though sometimes large-scale inquiries are just swifter and more thorough with a phonecall.

Oh, a detective! It'd be wonderful to work with you, Mrs. Skye.

Hughes, you do know that Roy is married. At least...this town thinks so.

I don't know anything about the Smiths.

Ah, yes! I forgot he had such a lovely wife on a technicality~! Such a shame, too--you'd make an excellent lover outside of Mayfield, you know!
