Happy birthday to introject! In honor of your birthday I wrote you a ficlet! :)

It's just something I had sitting partially done on my computer, so I rushed to complete it today. It is inspired by your pic HERE. I hope you like it! :)

(I think it sucks. =/ I tried a new style and I don't like it. XD)

Title: Destiny
Rating: PG
Ship: AS/S
Summary: What's with this red string?

One night Albus Potter looked out of the window in Gryffindor tower and saw a shooting star. He closed his eyes and made a wish. When he opened his eyes the star was gone. He shrugged and got into bed.

The next morning Albus Potter woke up, stretched, and rubbed his eyes. Then he itched the skin around the red string on his finger.

Where had the string come from? Al hadn’t tied the string to his finger. He tugged at it, and tried to untie it, but it wouldn’t come off.

Al shrugged. He got out of bed, got dressed, and headed down to breakfast.

“Good morning!” his cousin Rose said as he sat down next to her at the Gryffindor table. “Did you know you have a red string on your finger?”

Al nodded and dug into his breakfast. “I don’t know where it came from but it won’t come off and it isn’t bothering me, so it’s fine.”

Rose stared at him. “What if it’s a hex?”

Al looked at the string for a moment. “I don’t think it is. I think it’s something good.”

Rose sighed and changed the subject. They ate breakfast in peace and then headed off to Potions with the Hufflepuffs. He collaborated with Laura Macmillan, and they finished their potion quickly. It was destroyed, however, when the end of the red string fell into it.

Laura wailed about her ruined grade while Al contemplated the string. Before it had just been a short piece of string tied around his finger like a ring. Now it had a two-inch tail. How odd.

Al shrugged and packed up his books for Transfiguration. The string felt right on his finger, so he wasn’t going to mess with it.

The string continued to grow during his classes. By lunchtime, the string was three feet long. It still wasn’t bothering Al much, though people kept stepping or sitting on it. He tried to wrap it around his finger, but it wouldn’t stay. Al didn’t mind, so he just ignored it.

By the time dinner rolled around, the string was too long to measure. It seemed to be getting longer by the second. Al didn’t start to worry though, at least, not until the string began to move. It slowly snaked its way across the room towards the door. Al sighed and shrugged. Then he grabbed a piece of bread and headed off to the library to study.

The string preceded him to the library. Al watched it race ahead of him. He was intrigued and followed the string.

He followed it all the way to the back corner of the library. Then he found that his string had wrapped itself around Scorpius Malfoy’s finger as well.

“What are you doing here, Potter?”

Al shrugged. “I followed the string.”

Scorpius glanced at both of their hands. “My string has been growing since this morning. Why is it stuck to you?”

“I’ve had a string on my finger since this morning too. A minute ago it started moving and I followed it here.”

“And now there’s only one string?” Scorpius asked.

“It looks like it,” Al said.

“How odd...” Scorpius murmured. Al sat down at Scorpius’s table.

“Why are we connected like this?” Scorpius asked.

Al thought. And thought. And thought.

“Last night I made a wish,” Al said.

“So what?”

“I made a wish that I would find my true love.”

Scorpius gaped. “And you think it’s me?”

Al smiled. “I do.”

Scorpius closed his eyes, opened them, and nodded. “I think I can handle that. This feels right.”

Al held out his hand. “Al Potter. Nice to meet you.” They already knew of each other, but they hadn’t really met before this.

“Scorpius Malfoy.”

They shook hands and the red string between them faded away. All that remained was a thin band of red metal on each of their ring fingers.

They spent the evening talking. When Al crawled back into bed that night he looked out the window. Another shooting star flew past, but he didn’t need to make a wish. He smiled at the ring on his finger. He already had everything he could ever want.
