Uhura really did not want to be here. She didn't want to have to do this, and she most especially didn't want anyone she knew to see her doing this... but she had needs. Needs that weren't currently being fulfilled. Now that a bit of the shock of her sudden relocation had worn off, those needs were making themselves known with a vengeance.

She only had one item in her hands. This wasn't a complicated ordeal, and she certainly didn't need anything fun for sharing. She just needed something to take the edge off. Something to keep her from going insane with a desperate desire for something else that she couldn't have.

Jim had been here recently, and it wasn't like he was making a habit of the place. But there were some things you didn't want to leave to chance, and he'd realized that he'd forgotten to pick up more lube. So he was back, selecting something multi-purposed (and not flavored) and reading the ingredients as he meandered up to the counter. It was always interesting, figuring out what was the same and what was diff--

"Oh, excuse me," he said automatically to the woman he'd nearly run into.

Uhura's eyes went wide immediately, before she was able to wrestle her expression into something a little less guilty. Jim Kirk. 'Oh, come on!' She quickly moved both hands behind her back, hiding the box from view and, because it looked kind of ridiculous, widened her stance slightly as an afterthought. Standing to attention. Kind of. It was more Spock's thing, but she'd spent enough time watching him to have a shot at making it look natural. "Captain."

Of course, none of this attempt at forced nonchalance changed the fact that she was standing in the middle of a sex shop.

She was standing like Spock. Which was a weird thing to think, because Spock stood at parade rest all the time and there wasn't anything Jim could put his finger on that made that different from any other parade rest.

But Uhura was doing it.

His eyebrows rose, head tilted slightly, and his face didn't color. He really needed to stop running into would-be crew in here. For their comfort, not his.

"Um. I thought we'd settled on Jim?"

"You settled on Jim, Captain." she reminded him gently. She'd spent too many years refusing to use that name for the habit to just drop away so easily. She could call the one she knew Jim Kirk when talking about him to other people - usually complaining. But to his face? It sounded wrong in her mind.

Were they just going to pretend that they weren't standing between a display of handcuffs and a shelf full of dildos? Cause she was very, very all right with that, if that was the plan. Of their own volition, her eyes darted down to see what it was that Kirk was holding. Damnit. "Admiral," she tried, just to see how felt, but mostly to fill the silence. That was even stranger. "Kirk?" There was no way to win, was there?

Jim followed the line of her gaze, down to the very obvious bottle in his hand. He stared at it a moment, as if trying to determine the reason for her silence.

"Ah," he said, looking back up. "You know what? You call me whatever makes you most comfortable. Or, you know, if you have to go, that's fine, too. Or if you want me to go."

Or he could just resign himself to the fact that he was going to meet everyone he knew here, and most likely the people least desirous of seeing him in a place like this.

Uhura wasn't uncomfortable for the reason Jim was probably assuming, if he'd come to a conclusion at all. She was jealous, actually, which just made her feel even more ridiculous and out of place. But clearly he had someone to... go shopping for, and she did not. It made her own reasons for being in the place all the more pathetic in her mind ( ... )

Jim wasn't uncomfortable at all except in sympathy with Uhura, who didn't seem to know where to look and was currently offering a litany of unnecessary and aborted attempts at smoothing things over. His brow furrowed in confusion as she spoke, wondering how judging even came into it, wondering where she was going with this and wishing there was some graceful way to stop her before she got there.

"There" wasn't where he was expecting.

"What?" he said unhelpfully. "I admit, it's not a great social venue, but no one here is going to judge you for--" his eyes finally slid down to her hand, against his will, and then back up "--anything."

All right, attempting to shift so that there was no way he could see her hands behind her back, that would just be childish. It would also probably give the impression that she had something much worse than she actually did. It was just a vibrator. Her shoulders slumped slightly and she took her hands from behind her back. She didn't offer anything up for scrutiny, but Jim probably didn't need it. The packaging wasn't exactly discreet.

"The first priority for all of us is obviously finding a way to get back to where we belong." If there was something she could be doing to help, she'd have been doing it. There wasn't, though, and-- "A stressful mind is a distracted mind, and urges don't just... go away." Especially if there was no one else to help you take care of him. But that didn't really need to be said, did it? Especially considering that she was about to buy battery operated help.

Jim's confusion displayed openly on his face, though he quickly tried to suppress it. It was born of Uhura's need to explain something that was both obvious and reasonable. He hadn't asked. And all women, in his opinion, should own at least one vibrator. It was only right and healthy.

"Uh, no," he said. He was the one standing there with practically a sign pointing towards "anal sex." Okay so it didn't have to be for that, but Uhura probably wasn't the type not to go there, considering her farm animal crack, for one. "That's what I'm trying to say. I think we're here for the same reasons, Uhura. It wasn't my intention to make you uncomfortable."

"Of course... Admiral." It was still strange to even think of Kirk as an Admiral, but maybe that didn't have to be a bad thing. It provided a clear distinction between the two men, and Uhura had a feeling that maybe that was exactly what she needed at the moment. Distance. "Permission to speak freely?"

Uhura knew that she didn't actually need his permission. Not here. Not like this. It never even occurred to her that he would do anything other than give it. There was a comfort in the routine, though. It let them have a round of back and forth that was normal, even if it wasn't necessary.

Jim's brow furrowed again, briefly, as he tried to sort out where things had gone wrong. Before remembering that he didn't actually know this woman and he was, once again, assuming familiarity that was unfair.

"Of course," he said. "Always." Considering they were unlikely to be serving together anytime soon.

Uhura relaxed her posture - though it was still perfectly straight, it was less rigid. She wasn't fidgeting, but her fingers were tapping lightly against the cardboard and plastic of the box in her hands, the only physical sign of her nervousness. "I think I am... embarrassed that I am embarrassed, more than anything else." Yes, that was a pretty fair assessment.

"If I'd ever run into the Jim Kirk I know in a place like this, I don't believe I ever would have been able to live it down. I don't believe he ever would have let me forget it. Not to mention the innuendo and offers of assistance and I don't know what else I'm sure there would have been as fallout." She could almost hear it now, the assurances that he was better than anything she could buy and his batteries would never run out. The snide remarks about Spock apparently not being quite so perfect ( ... )

Jim blinked at her explanation, not interrupting her and finally, at the end, smiling gently but not without amusement. When she was done, he chuckled.

"I see," he said. But he didn't--he had no idea about Uhura and Spock, and nothing in her speech gave him a clue. "You don't have to explain anything, Uhura. We're all in a different situation, here. Now, I admit I might have been inclined to make some choice remarks, at some point in my youth. But I've gotten more and less serious, with age."

Of course he spoke as if "with age" was a joke, like he wasn't anything approaching old.

"I spent five years commanding a ship of 430," he said. "I've absorbed a lot about what people need and shouldn't be ashamed of. But if you want me to walk away right now, I promise I'll never mention it."

He couldn't promise he wouldn't think about it, but he'd spent five years on a ship of 430 people with whom he couldn't actually do anything. Thinking was not something he could take off the menu.

He was being so incredibly reasonable. It made her feel ridiculously foolish, yet somehow much more at ease at the same time. He was absolutely right - that didn't hurt matters any. "Don't be silly." She was talking to herself more than anything, but directing it at Kirk. "We're both adults. We're not doing anything wrong. It's not as though either of us are buying anything perverse." Justification. Such a beautiful thing.

"There's no reason we can't just walk up to the counter and pay and pretend that I didn't act like a complete moron just a few minutes ago, is there?" The never mentioning it also sounded wonderful. She'd like it very much if they never had to discuss this encounter again once it was over.

"Nope," Jim said, smiling. "Then again, I could also give you my two cents' worth of advice, but that probably is crossing a line. Anyway, I'm pretty sure perverse is in the eye of the beholder."

He motioned for her to precede him, if she liked.
