The Doctor arrived at the mansion, a plastic sack from a nearby grocery hanging from one hand. He got a bit turned around finding Sirius' room, but eventually he stumbled upon a door that seemed like the right one.

"Sirius?" He tried the door. Open. He poked his head in, just to make sure it was alright to enter, and then he did just that.

"I brought crisps and biscuits. And a jar of cashew nuts. And some bananas. Didn't know what you wanted. Could've asked. Didn't."

Someone who never uses them, I'm sure :D seriousmarauder May 4 2011, 19:13:58 UTC
It's not really a mansion (not like the CGM, anyway), but it's a very large house, complete with an outdoor swimming pool and everything.

Sirius had fortunately had a bath and a fresh change of clothes at this point, though he was still resting on the bed. He smiled at the Doctor, a little surprised to see him. Jack's words came back to him, but he pushed them aside. The Doctor was here when he needed him, that was what mattered for now.

"It sounds brilliant, Doctor," he reassured him. "I'll eat anything, really." Three years of Azkaban would do that to anyone. Not that he'd been a picky eater to begin with.

Probably lucky for Sirius. The crisps were labeled 'Prawn Cocktail' and the bananas looked rather sad. The chocolate biscuits and unsalted cashews, on the other hand, would turn out to be blessedly normal.

He walked over to the bed and dropped the bag next to Sirius. Sat down on the edge. Bounced a bit.

"You look better," he offered.

"Thanks...I had a bit of help, actually," Sirius admitted, looking embarrassed. He munched on the crisps though, really not minding the odd flavour. He offered some to the Doctor, too.

"You're looking better, too...what happened to you, Doctor?" he asked, still concerned about him despite everything else.

He accepted a crisp and appeared to contemplate it. Although he was actually thinking about how to word his answer.

"A bad decision," he finally decided on. Crunch. "Not my fault. Still trying to work out whose exactly it was, but I know it wasn't mine."

Sirius just gave him a look. "You're going to have to give me more than that, Doctor. I don't care who's fault it was...I just want to know what sort of bad decision you're talking about, here."

This Doctor was just as important to him as the other one, even if they didn't know each other as well. Sirius couldn't really keep them separate in his head, not after dealing with two Remuses already.

The Doctor went a bit distant. He was really rather fond of Sirius: out of all the people he'd first met in Bete Noire, he was probably the Doctor's favourite. If anybody at all deserved the whole truth, Sirius most definitely made the short list.

Still, it was an admission of failure. He really hated those.

"Couple of weeks ago there was an incident. Whole mess of people across the city had bad dreams. Next day there were crows everywhere. That part's still pretty weird. Can't account for it. Point is, something about the dreams and the crows. It made people irrational."

He glanced over at Sirius. "Sirius, how much did my other self tell you about life in our home universe?"

Sirius thought about that, remembering snippets of conversations he's had with the Doctor's other self. "I know it's not all grand adventures. You've known grief and death, and nightmares." The understanding look in his eyes said he'd known these things, too.

"...Yeah," he admitted, still with an air of reluctance.

"It was like it was all happening again, all at once. I was overwhelmed. Wasn't thinking. Went up against the first thing I came across, something I wasn't prepared for, and, well. You saw the aftermath."

He reached over, gripping the Doctor's hand gently. "I'm sorry, Doctor. It's something you'll learn about this place...horrible, overwhelming things happen all the time. Most people would rather be anywhere else...I'm a bit of an exception," he admitted.

The Doctor glanced down at Sirius' hand and looked like - well, like he didn't know what to look like.

"S'pose I would be too, since I can't be anywhere else." He gave Sirius a little twitch of a smile, a sort of 'thank you,' and drew his hand away, taking a breath in. Then some of his usual energy came back. A little bit. "Anyway. Whatever did that is still out there, so long as I'm stuck here I might as well do what I can to stop it."

Sirius was used to the Doctor's awkwardness when it came to touch, so he wasn't bothered when he pulled away. He shook his head, though. "That's not what I mean...I mean, this place is better for me. I'd rather be here than my own world."

He let that thought linger for a moment, then shook his head. "I'll do what I can to help, though. Er...once I can get out of bed, that is."

It wasn't so much the touch as the comfort. But yeah. He held up an index finger in a way that said, moving on, got up and moved around to the foot of the bed.

"Speaking of that, what happened to you? So long as we're sharing horrible stories."

Sirius hesitated. He hadn't actually told the Doctor's self about his involvement in the Secret Police for several reasons, and he wasn't sure if telling this one was a good idea either. But he didn't want to lie to him.

"It's...complicated, Doctor. But the very simple version is that I got shot -- not the first time since I've been here, by the way," he muttered, glaring down at his covers.

"You know they make vests for that." He frowned. "I'd ask what sort of situations you're getting yourself into to get shot so much, but I have a feeling it's just a matter of bad luck in this town. Is it a matter of bad luck? Or should I be asking?"

"They're not related...and it's not really bad luck, though I have got a knack for getting myself into trouble," Sirius admitted, running a hand through his hair.

"The first time I was Padfoot...accompanying the Remuses on the full moon. Got shot by mistake, in the shoulder. The second time was work-related." He paused. "...I wasn't exactly a consultant, Doctor. That was just my cover story."
