Wednesday 11 - lunch time talentd_tongue May 14 2011, 16:49:14 UTC
Uhura found out when she went to see Tony on Tuesday and he wasn't home. She didn't go rushing to the hospital then, because she hadn't had the time, but she had the time now. Not a ton of time, but a lunch break. It was better than nothing.

She knocked once on the door to signal her presence, and to catch his attention so he'd be looking at it when it opened, so he'd be able to see her hands. Then she slipped inside.

'Hello, Mr. Stark.'

It's probably the best she's likely to get from Tony. It's good enough, though. At least it means she won't be actively pissing him off with her refusal to leave him be. She'd be here regardless, but it's nice to also feel like she's wanted, even if it's like pulling teeth to get him to admit it.

She also smiles because he's eating, and she nudges the container of fries closer to him with a nod. 'They're pretty amazing. Sea salt and white pepper.'

"Great. Thanks," Tony says. He grabs a handful of them to stuff into his mouth. White pepper, he tastes it--absolutely delicious. River would probably disapprove if she saw him giving himself a heart attack, but...

He swallows the bite and the corner of his mouth twitches up.

'Very classy.' But she's happy to see him eating. Happy to see real appetite. It shows on her face. 'So. No onions. Any other food quirks I should know about?' She takes a sip of the soda and then holds the can out to him, a questioning look in her eyes.

Uhura would've made a good assistant, he thinks. But he can't hire another for the shifts Ada can't take--too much like finding a replacement for what he can't replace.

He declines her soda in favor of the water bottle from the hospital. "No green peppers," he tells her, "on anything."

Uhura would have made an incredible assistant. It's a good thing that Tony thought it, though, and didn't say it. As much as she liked him, and she did like him quite a bit, she had no desire to be an assistant. She had a fantastic job - Press Secretary for the driving force of the city, the face and voice of the government. No, she'd prefer to just stay his friend, if that was what they were now. She was here out of obligation, but even if there had been no obligation, she still would have come. Which made them friends, or at least it made him her friend. 'Agreed.' She took another sip of the soda, something to spike her blood sugar a bit until she could get a proper meal. She poached a fry. Poached because they were his now. 'Anything that smells like vomit when you cook it is something we probably should not have tried to eat in the first place.'

Tony sets the box of fries halfway between them, a silent offer to share. The burger, though, he keeps to himself. "Any mention of vomit while you eat something is probably not something you should've mentioned in the first place," he points out after another bite.

She takes a fry. She's only going to have a couple. She does want him to eat.

'I didn't realize you were such a delicate flower.'.

After a moment, she nudges the rest of the pickle into the center of the table, too. She can share. If he likes pickles. Which he should. Because they are amazing.

'I'll try to tailor my conversation to be more neutral and acceptable.'

Tongue in cheek. Or it would be, if her tongue and cheek had anything to do with the words being formed. Finger in palm just sounds weird.

"I have delicate tastes," he corrects, though it's off-handed and maybe more of a lie, because he crunches off the end of one pickle and looks tempted to mix it with another bite off the burger.

'Most delicate flowers do,' Uhura counters.

She crunches down on her pickle spear again, munching away contentedly and seeming for all the world like this is her ideal lunch date.

'So...'

She takes another couple of fries, lots of ketchup.

'I'm thinking Chinese for dinner.'

A brief, but careful look. Uhura's the press secretary for the Magistrate. She helps him out of duty, obligation, or idealism--her pick which. But bringing food to the crazy guy in the hospital feels more like charity work, and not in her job description. That Uhura might actually consider him a friend doesn't even occur to him.

"That's your choice," he says. "Don't let me stop you."

Uhura nods. 'All right, then we're having Chinese. If you have any favourites, let me know before I head back to work.' It's actually fairly nice, this being able to talk with her mouth full and not be rude. Too bad she can't take this trick with her when she leaves this place.

She checks in on Tony out of obligation, yes, but she could satisfy that obligation in just a few minutes. She doesn't have to sit with him. She certainly doesn't have to eat with him. She most definitely does not have to come back twice in one day. It would be just as easy to send a delivery boy with the understanding that his tip is directly proportionate to his ability to stay silent. No, she stays because she likes Tony. Or she's well on her way to liking him. Which is where spending time together comes in.
