[Ice cream party with Uhura]

Things were... actually kind of horrible and fantastic, in equal measure. Gaila. She still didn't know what to make of that. Spock trusting her with the address of the place he'd been hiding himself this whole time. Except not, because Vulcans did not hide. She wished she'd been able to hold off for at least a day before running to him. She wished she hadn't had a mini-meltdown in front of him. This city was not good for her composure.

But she needed to stop hiding from Jim. He'd been nothing but fantastic to her since she'd arrived. He deserved better than he'd gotten this last week, and she intended to make up for it, just like she'd promised.

So, Wednesday evening, after work, she changed her clothes and made a quick trip to the kitchen and was back on her floor, but one door to the side, in under ten minutes. Hands too full to knock, she bent her leg and hit the door with her knee a few times. "You in there?"

He was. And the window had yet to appear, so Jim was merely hungry. Which often made him, if not irritable, a little sensitive. So Uhura showing up unannounced was a good thing, a reminder more that he had friends than that she'd been avoiding him for some reason he still couldn't fathom unless she'd somehow picked up on the fact he'd felt... conflicted about her relationship with Spock.

Which was unworthy of him. And had nothing to do with her.

He smiled when he opened to door to find her weighed down. With ice cream. Swinging the door wide open, he nodded to her hands.

"Lieutenant," he said, in a tone which might as well have been her first name. "Please tell me that's for me."

"Well... part of it," she said with a laugh. She was very glad to see him. "Let me in, my arm is going numb." She had two bowls of ice cream - two very big bowls. Mint chocolate chip, but also plain chocolate, several scoops in each. Tucked and held and balanced in her arms and hands she also had chocolate sauce, whipped cream, chocolate chips, nuts, dinner mints, cherries, sprinkles... basically, she'd cleaned out the cupboards of everything a person could conceivably want to put on top of ice cream.

"Those look amazing," Jim said, ushering her inside and offering to relieve her of half her burden. They did, too. Uhura had gone all out.

"What the occasion? My birthday was two months ago." He frowned. "I didn't forget yours, did I?"

"You did not," she assured him, giving him the bigger bowl, because she was nice, and also because that gave her more room for toppings. "I didn't know if you were allergic to nuts." She sat down on the bed, letting the extra toppings fall out of her arm, and then holding up the bag of roasted almonds and peanuts. "But I brought nuts if you're not." Actually, yes. She opened the bag and dumped more of said nuts on top of her ice cream. She hated it when you ate all the toppings off of a sundae with the first layer of ice cream and were then left with just the plain ice cream. Also, she was just really hungry.

Jim gazed hungrily at the nuts tumbling out onto her sundae. "No, I'm not," he said. "But... this is amazing. Thank you."

It was as if she'd read his mind--this was exactly what he wanted. And that it was Uhura touched him. He still didn't know what had happened to make her avoid him, but...

"Actually, birthdays aside, I have something for you." He'd been keeping it for the next time he saw her, and now he went to a shelf and took down a little box with a bow on it. Inside she'd find a vibrator, small but versatile. He hoped it wasn't inappropriate. Well, in the wrong way.

Uhura set aside the nuts and took the box in her hand instead. She arranged her folded legs so that she could balance the bowl of ice cream in the middle of her lap, the cold seeping through her sweatpants, but not enough to be uncomfortable. She shook the box a little while she put a huge bite in her mouth, making sure to get lots of chocolate sauce. Bets part, after all, aside from the actual ice cream. Her raised eyebrows asked what it was since her mouth was full, and then she set down her spoon to open it.

When she saw the contents, one hand went to cover her mouth, because she laughed. With her mouth still full of dessert. Which resulted in a kind of snorting sound. She tried to breathe and chew and swallow all at the same time, and when she finally came up for air her cheeks were red. "You got me a travel size vibrator." She assumed it was turnabout for the cock ring with the little red bow. "Thank you, Jamie."

Jim grinned cockily, victorious in both her surprise and pleasure.

"Well, without permanent addresses, I thought it advisable," he said, leaning over to grab the nuts and pour a liberal portion over his sundae. Which was starting to melt, so he sat at the end of the bed and tucked in. "You never know when you might need one."

This was nice, easy and companionable, something he'd wanted back in his universe--something he'd always known was possible--but command had never allowed him to have.

"I'm glad you came by."

Uhura turned it on and was surprised to see how powerful it was for its size. She refrained from commenting on just how much use she could see herself getting out of it because, well... that might be crossing the line a bit too much. She was still getting comfortable with the fact that she was sitting on Jim Kirk's bed holding a vibrator, had been for at least thirty seconds, and he hadn't yet made an offer to use it on her. Never would have happened back home. She clicked it off again, put it back in the box, and tried to arrange her smile into something that was just happy and not quite so dirty ( ... )

Jim couldn't help the smile that shone on his face, nor did he want to. She'd like his gift, it had been received in the proper spirit, and she'd used his name. Now he shook his head.

"You don't need to apologize," he said. "You didn't do anything to me. We all need some time off, right?" He took a delicious bite, the pleasure eclipsing even his purposeless hunger for the moment. "Do you want to talk about it?"

"Just Spock... being Spock," she said with a shake of her head and another huge bite of ice cream. Where had she put the whipped cream? Also, how had she managed to eat all of hers in just three bites? "Sometimes I wonder why he's with me." She said it like it was a joke, even managed to laugh, but there was a kernel of truth in that. Ah, there was the can. Uhura put a huge mound atop the highest scoop in her bowl, then tilted her head back and put a much smaller mound directly into her mouth. "Mrrr?" she asked, holding out the can in Jim's direction, upside down with her finger still on the nozzle.

A little frown of dismay crossed Jim's features at that, an answer ready on his tongue, but Uhura distracted him with whipped cream. A relationship where a girl you were not having sex with would personally inject whipped cream into your mouth was a relationship Jim would treasure, so he leaned forward and opened his mouth for her. He was impressed that the technology of Bete Noire had extended to cans of whipped cream; sometimes it seemed hopelessly primitive ( ... )

"Oh! No, no no no." Uhura held up her hand and smiled, shaking her head. "I'm not being down on myself. I know why most men would want to be with me." She stuffed another huge bite of ice cream in her mouth, which probably did nothing to highlight those specific attributes, but she wasn't after Jim, and he wasn't after her. "Spock is his own set of rules, though. Sometimes I don't know why he specifically is with me. I'm... fun and loud physical and most of the time being in a relationship with him is like pulling teeth."

She was making it sound horrible, wasn't she. "It's worth it," she hurried to add. "It's just... it's complicated." Jim should understand. he had his own Spock, after all. "That's all I meant."

It wouldn't have mattered--Jim liked a girl who could put away food. But it was beside the point here. He thought about it, lips thinning as he thought about his own Spock, the possessive his brain preceded it with only apparent to him once it was clear Spock wasn't.

"I can't claim to know why the Spock I know does some of the things he does, let alone a man with a different past. But I do know he doesn't do anything he doesn't believe in, or doesn't want. The how and why aren't always clear."

He took another bite, thoughtful. He hadn't thought to doubt her phrasing--a relationship with Spock would be like pulling teeth and part of Jim had been very clear lately that anyone who wanted one deserved a certain amount of sympathy.

"Spock--my Spock, and I'm guessing yours--had a choice. Half Human, half Vulcan, he had an uncharted course to set. He could have stayed on Vulcan, followed in his father's footsteps. But he chose Starfleet. He'd have had a brilliant future either way, and he'd have been 'alien' either way. Spock chose to be ( ... )

Jim had pretty much hit it right on the head. "It's taken me four years to get to where we are. I'm pretty sure I was his only actual friend before we came here." Another huge bite of ice cream while she considered that. One more thing to put in the ridiculously small 'pro' column on her mental list. "While I was still a student, he--" Uhura shook her head and laughed and she wasn't entirely sure why she was telling Jim, but... "Our first kiss, he gave me this completely flat and totally spot on list of all the reasons it was a horrible idea for us to be together. And he was right. I agreed with him. And then he kissed me... and he just smiled and walked out of the room." It was still a new concept for Uhura, to be able to acknowledge her relationship. It was nice.
