starting on the deck, but heading inside rather quickly talentd_tongue May 25 2011, 22:53:02 UTC
Uhura was mingling, moving from group to group asking questions and playing hostess to a certain extent. It wasn't because she'd been asked, or out of any deep desire to see to everyone else before herself.

No, it was mostly an excuse to stay moving and avoid Kirk. Her Kirk.

She laughed at the punchline of a joke, popped a mini quiche in her mouth, and tried to listen for any sounds that might give away his approach.

Jim was having a great time. There were a lot of new people to meet and he'd been pretty peckish lately, so all the food wasn't hurting that at all.

The only downside to the party was that he couldn't find Uhura- he was trying to get her to tell him where Spock was staying, and so far she'd been tight lipped about it. Whenever he spotted her with a group, by the time he joined them she was nowhere to be seen. He wouldn't put it past her to try to avoid him.

So when she appeared not too far awar, Jim jumped at the opportunity to finally catch her. He appeared beside her, grinning widely. "Great party, isn't it?"

Damn but that man could be stealthy when he put his mind to it. "Yes, it's a wonderful party," she agreed, smiling at the group. "Would anyone like another drink?" A pretty redhead nodded and held up her mostly empty beer and Uhura nodded. "One beer. Anyone else?" Two hands went up. "I'll be right back." She smiled at Jim and cocked her head to the side. "Excuse me." She took her plate and headed inside.

Oh no, she wasn't getting rid of him that easily. "I'll help her carry them." Jim excused himself quickly and tailed after her.

"Haven't seen Spock aound," he said concersationally, just reminding her that he'd love to know Spock's address. It was also to see if she knew if he was alright or not. "Has he joined a monastery or something?"

"That's because he's not here," she said, not rising to the bait. She headed straight for the kitchen, not taking any detours and not offering any extra familiarity. Having Kirk on her heels heaping inappropriate attention was annoying in its own way, but having him track her down constantly to bug her about Spock was just infuriating. "And no, I won't tell you where he is. Don't you think he'd have told you if he wanted you to know?"

Jim, following right behind her, nodded and grinned his way through the crowd (mostly at the women). "No, because he's Spock and he stubborn like that."

Looking around the kitchen, Jim found some beer and a glass and got himself a drink. "Besides, a party like this'd be good for him. Even Vulcan's aren't supposed to stay cooped up for days on end."

"So you think it's his intention for you to bother me about it until I either beat you with a fire iron or give in and tell you where he is? A party like this would not be good for him. He doesn't eat meat, he doesn't drink alcohol, and he hates large, noisy groups gathered together to no logical end." Uhura grabbed three bottles and opened them. "And that won't work. I'm not going to insist that he's not spending all his time cooped up and and then give you an example of how he spends his days that drops a clue just to get you to leave me alone. Nice try, though." Kirk could talk in circles all he liked, Uhura was better at it. Some day. Some day she had the faintest hope that he would turn into half the--

Hang on. Uhura frowned a little, then left the kitchen, headed for the back yard again. She didn't actually go outside, though, just stood in the doorway, the necks of three beer bottles clutched in one hand and her plate in the other, scanning the area, making sure.

Jim half tuned out the speech. He'd been expecting something like it, and he assumed it wasn't anything he didn't already know. He was drinking when she stopped mid sentence and almost lost half his drink over himself as he moved after her.

When he ended up next to her with no drink spilt, he felt quite proud of himself. Uhura seemed a little distracted from him.

"I'm pretty sure we'd have seen Spock if he was here."

"I'm not looking for Spock..." Of course she would have seen him if he was here. Her voice wasn't quite as cold, mostly because she was distracted.

No, the man she was looking for wasn't Spock, and he definitely wasn't here. "Take these out," she said, shoving the three bottles at him and then turning on her heel and heading back into the house. "I'm going to go see what's keeping Jim." It wasn't like him to miss a party.
