Christine had offered to look after Tony to give Uhura a break, so after work and a quick dinner, she knocked on the door to Tony's room and opened it a hair.

"Tony? Is it all right if I come in?"

Uhura is the one who gets up and answers the door. Tony's room is really just a play room, for lack of a better word. They both sleep in Uhura's room - Tony on the bed, and Uhura on a cot near the door. After the conversations she's been having all week, well... for every one that makes her feel supported and like she can actually do this, there is at least one that makes her feel nervous and off balance.

"Chapel." Uhura smiles, and steps aside so that the blonde woman can enter. "Thank you so much for this. I just need an hour to get a shower and check in with a few people."

She turns and looks over her shoulder. "Tony, this is Nurse Chapel. She's a friend of mine and she's going to stay with you for a little while. Come say hello."

Tony sits at a small table with a paint-stained apron on over his normal clothes. He paints in slow, smooth lines with the brush. One finished picture, set off to the side, is a bright patchwork of colors filling every inch of the page.

The picture he's working on now he just started, just a single, thick black line down one side of the page. "Hello," he says, looking up. Uhura's friends are always nice.

A grown man, complete with facial hair, sitting there with paints like a child.

"It's not a problem, Uhura. I'm happy to help."

Christine entered the room and gave Tony a friendly smile.

"Hello, yourself. You can call me Christine, if you'd like." Seeing that he was painting, she came over towards the table.

"What are you painting?"

Uhura holds back, just watching them. She does need time for herself, and she trusts Chapel. If she were injured, she would trust the woman with her life. This isn't her life, though. It's Tony's, and taking care of him is a much greater responsibility than taking care of herself. So, while she trusts Chapel with get life, she still watches her with Tony, until she knows she can trust her with his.

Tony lowers his eyes to the table, to each of the pictures in turn. He acts startlingly calm. Back to Christine, he finally says, "I'm making art," with his tone pleasant and airy.

Christine's heart went out to the man. She didn't know his whole story at all, in fact she knew very little, but she doubted he would have wanted to be this way. At least he didn't realize something had happened to him to leave him in this state. He looked completely content.

"It's very pretty art too. I really like the colors in that one." She gestured to his finished piece. "Would I be in your way if I took a seat here?" She placed her hand on the back of the chair opposite him, waiting for his answer.

"I counted how many there were," he says.

Then he pauses with a glance to Uhura, and he shakes his head, a slow side-to-side. "No. You're not in my way."

She can sit there, if she likes.

"Really? How many colors are there?" She pulled out the chair and sat down, pausing to give Uhura a smile that said the woman could leave to shower if she wanted to.

"Thirty-six," he says. He looks down to his current page, where the black drips onto from the brush. He smooths the brush across it, to add another line to the first. "I couldn't fit them all on..."

"That's still an impressive number to put down on paper." She tilted her head slightly, watching him work for a moment before speaking again.

"What are you working on now?"

Uhura tells him stories before he sleeps. A lot of them are about heroes.

"I'm painting a monster," Tony says, sliding the brush across the page again, but the paint peters out, running dry. He dips the brush into the black swatch.

"Heroes fight monsters," he tells her.

"That's right," she answers.

Christine doesn't have much of a maternal side; she's too career oriented at the moment to think about things like that, but she has a deeply compassionate side, and seeing this man like this makes her want to do everything in her power to keep him happy and comfortable.

"Are you gonna paint a hero into your picture too?"

Chapel's smile is encouraging, but Tony's acceptance of her as someone likable clinches it for Uhura. "I'll be back soon," she promises them both, then slips out the door and heads to take care of herself for a little while.

He curves the brush around until he's filling in the entire form with solid black. But it's methodical--not the frenzied coloring of a young child. He's taking his time. Being exact.

Uhura leaving only gets a curious glance.

"I don't know what a hero looks like," he admits.

"A hero can look like anybody," Christine explained. "As long as they stand up to a monster to protect people, they're a hero." She took notice of how he painted, not like a child but with the mind of one. It was fascinating to watch.
