Backdated to late Friday night, random bar? always_thewoman June 20 2011, 02:51:06 UTC
It had been a long night - two shows, an argument with one of the stagehands, and the faint but ever-present ache in her stomach hadn't made it a cakewalk by any means. And then there was that strange something that'd been pulling at her all night. At first it'd put her on edge, made her almost jittery, but by this point in the evening it'd dulled to a gentle tug, one that was not entirely unpleasant.

She wasn't ordinarily one for visiting bars - working at The Sanctuary meant that bars weren't generally a useful way to wind down after work - but that niggling sensation that'd been at her all night pricked at her on her way home just as she was passing a darkened entrance. And so here she was, perched on a bar stool and sipping on a glass of red wine, thinking that whatever intuition had lead her here, she didn't much mind. It was a very good wine, after all.

Spike didn't normally frequent bars where ladies like her sat drinking red wine. It was enough to make him look twice from where he lounged against one wall, close to the bar. Just... watching. Passing time. He was bored, which was not a stable state of affairs when he wasn't being influenced by the city.

Shoving off the supporting wall, he sauntered over to the bar, ordering a beer.

"You in the wrong bar, or me?" he asked casually.

Irene's eyes moved over him, then flicked around the bar - dark, a bit rough around the edges, and completely unapologetic. Not unlike, she rather thought, the man who'd addressed her.

With a little self-deprecating smile she said, "The former, in all likelihood. But then," she added, her smile a touch sharper around the edges, "Not all of us can pull off leather." She quirked her eyebrows momentarily - an ingratiating rather than mocking gesture - before taking another sip of her drink.

Spike looked her over in turn. American, but... there was something off. His slow smirk didn't much care, however.

"You lookin' for some to pull off, I may be able to help."

"I prefer silk," she returned easily - appropriate, given that even when dressed in modern clothes her tastes tended towards the refined. "No accounting for taste, I suppose."

Spike took a drink, not taking his eyes off her. "Your loss," he said casually. He cocked his head. "You're not from around now, are you?"

She shook her head. "Last I knew, it was 1891. It left an awful lot of catching up for me to do." She paused and took a moment to regard him more carefully. Oh.

"But then, you're not exactly contemporary either, are you?" It was a guess, but one she was willing to stand by. "You pass remarkably well."

Spike snorted.

"'m modern as they come," he said. "Just... seen all the bits in between your time an' this one." Spike didn't at all feel like a product of his human world. Everything had changed--and he'd embraced the world's changes along with it. He'd never had that trouble. Delighted in the invention of the telly and processed foods and everything new. As long as it interested him.

"And yet we both ended up here. I must not've missed too much." She shook her head even as she said it, a rueful smile tugging at her mouth. Truth be told, she still had to fight the feeling that she'd been left behind, that everyone else had been given some cosmic advantage of time that she hadn't. She'd missed a lot, and she knew it.

Her fingers tapped idly along the top of the bar in a studied show of nonchalance. The supernatural hadn't quite become common-place to her, either. "Are you immortal, then?"

Spike figured that if you were going to skip a few years, a large portion of the 20th century was a good choice. But he didn't regret living through it.

"So far," he said. "Nice work, if you can get it."

"The opportunity's never presented itself." Not to say that she'd necessarily take it if it did, just that it hadn't even been a possibility until recently. "But I can believe it. Must be nice, never having to worry about crow's feet or losing all your pearly whites."

Spike's tongue moved across those teeth, smirking at what she didn't know about them. "Live fast an' die pretty," he said happily. "So. Havin' skipped the intervening years, what's most impressive to you? Experienced the wonder of fast food yet?"
