He'd actually been searching for the courthouse when he'd found the hospital. But hey - he hadn't actually taken a look inside the hospital yet. Not that he planned on ending up there himself, but he had a lot of friends in the city by now. If any of them got hurt, he wanted to make certain they were going to a good place.
He was wandering about the recovery ward when he finally remembered what he'd been doing in the first place.
He turned in the direction of the woman nearby, speaking more at her than to her:
"This... is not the courthouse."

"No, it's not. Were you looking for the courthouse?"

"But," he went on, "No. Well, yes. Was looking for the courthouse. Found the hospital. Not bothered, it was just an exercise."
He took a breath for what might have seemed like the first time since he started talking, and took a look around. "Anyway, nice place you've got here. Not bad. Very twenty-first century Earth, but I was expecting that. Seems like a decent operation."

"Yeah, I'm from the 23rd century myself, so I've had to adapt to 21st century medical techniques." Without realizing it, she had drifted closer to him, examining his face and clothing closely. She didn't recognize him and didn't notice a medical bracelet or anything else identifying him as a patient. Maybe he was just eccentric then.
"But you really shouldn't be up here. Medical staff and patients only."

He was a little bothered by not being able to remember their earlier conversation. Normally he wouldn't be as much, but at the moment it was like trying to recall that one song lyric or the name of that celebrity you swear you ought to know, but you just. Can't. Remember. And 'Chapel' was a distinctive name.

Another moment and she was right up close to him, running a hand down his lapel. She wasn't even conscious she was doing it, but she was nonetheless.

"You're new, aren't you?" Still trying to remember. The more she talked, the closer he fancied he was getting.

...And then, it finally clicked. A month ago. 23rd century. Jim was from the 23d century. Enterprise!
"Oh!" he exclaimed, holding up a revelatory finger. "You're Nurse Chapel! With the 'beaming up' and the Enterprise! We spoke on your first day." He grinned, very pleased with himself for working it out.

He gave her a nod of acknowledgment. "Might I say you seem to be getting on well. Found your place here."

At the compliment, there was a subtle shift in her expression, eyes lighting up and a pleased smile crossing her lips. As much as she disliked the City, she wanted to fit in there; she wanted to succeed in holding the bad things at bay.
"You really think so? I've been making an effort. But it shows?" Christine just needed to hear that little bit of praise again.

"For what it's worth, I think you're sweet too. Do your best. Don't let this place take that from you."
