Jim was angry. He was hurt. But he wasn't heartless. Having moved the process along as fast as he could, Jim made it a point to make sure his orders were being carried out.

Sirius looked awful. Then again, Jim had lost some weight himself, and Sirius had every reason to look tired and haggard.

He walked down the hall, hating the echo of his footsteps, and stopped in front of Sirius' cell.

"Sirius," he said by way of greeting.

"Well, there aren't any Dementors here. And you're not going to go mad. And you're not going to starve yourself, either. If nothing else, you have a duty to see this trouble. To be there for the fallout. This? Here? This is the easy way. Substituting sacrifice and hunger for atonement. Do you think no one will think you repentant if you stop trying to negate yourself?"

He knew Sirius felt bad. He knew he was dealing with crippling guilt. But it angered Jim, to see him trying to make up for it by punishing himself. It was a cover, an out.

Sirius didn't respond to the part about not going mad. He wasn't sure about that. "It's not that I'm trying not to eat. It's that whenever I try, I can't. I don't...know how else to explain it."

Jim relented, shifting, his posture relaxing just slightly. "I understand," he said. "I do. But it's not worth killing yourself over. At some point you have to let yourself believe that."
