Coming home from work, Jim was sunk deep in thought. The police force was his best chance at making this place better. So he'd always thought, despite his dissatisfaction with the results. But this wasn't the Federation--one couldn't assume peoples' goals were the same. Still, he had to try.

He almost missed the other man coming his was, but sidestepped him just in time.

"Excuse me," he said, and then noted that he looked more than a little out of place. Not that it was easy to tell, around here. "Were you looking for something?"

"I am, actually." A woman, to be exact. But given Morrigan's track record and the fact that no one he'd spoken to had seen her arrive, finding her didn't seem very likely. Odds were she wasn't even in the city. Besides, he was sure this man might get the wrong impression if he asked, what with so many women having attempted to solicit themselves already.

"Would you be able to point me in the direction of an inn, or some other lodging for the night?" And then after a short pause, because apparently it was the number one priority for most of the people he'd encountered, "I can pay."

Jim waved a hand, his face concerned. "Yes, of course. You're new here, aren't you?" Well, that was obvious. "There's a hostel, Le Gode Hostel, which offers newcomers free room and board for two weeks. Until you can get on your feet."

And even if it didn't, Jim would have loaned the man money.

"I can point you there, or there are other hotels."

"What gave it away?" Aedan doesn't expect the man to answer. He's well aware that he didn't exactly blend in with the locals.

"I'd prefer something a little more private." Especially considering he'd already been robbed the once. If his assumptions about this place were correct then he really didn't want to put himself in a situation where it could happen again--or worse.

Not that he didn't appreciate the suggestion or this man's attempt to help him out. Which would explain the two silver pieces he held out as compensation for the trouble.

"Oh, it's somewhat badly named," Jim said, waving away the money with a slightly perplexed look. "The rooms are private, and lock. But it's up to you, of course. There's the Victoria Hotel, as well."

Along with innumerable flea-traps scattered throughout the city.

He preferred the latter. It sounded less Orlesian, anyway.

"Which way to the Victoria Hotel, then?" Said as his offered payment was re-pocketed.

Jim nodded. "I will say, the streets move around sometimes. But it should be..." He gave directions, using landmarks as best he could. "And if you're lost, you can always hop on the network and ask someone. Oh. Have you discovered that, yet?"

The streets moved around? Perhaps this city was more similar to the Fade than he originally thought.

"To be honest, I haven't discovered much of anything apart from the name of this city and now the location of this Victoria Hotel." And the fact that he'd been robbed blind, but he really didn't feel the need to share that.

"Ah," said Jim. "Sorry for getting ahead of things. You should have something on you--some sort of device--that allows you to access a city-wide network. For communication, advertising, that sort of thing."

Device? Aedan looked confused momentarily, before remembering something and reaching for the pendant that had been tucked into his collar. Once the item had been pulled from around his neck, he held it out to show the other man.

"This is the only thing that seemed to show up out of nowhere."

A pendant. That was different.

"We all got something that allows us to communicate, when we got here. Is that something familiar to you from your world? I mean, does it have a function?"

"Items like these aren't uncommon. Most have magical properties of some sort, but I've never seen one for communicating."

He turns it over in his hand, examining it further. Lo and behold, the reflective side lights up with some sort of display when his thumb brushes over the surface.

"Is this what you were talking about?"

Jim leans over, glancing at the surface, and nods.

"Looks like it," he says. "I'm assuming it doesn't do that normally? See if it responds to any sort of commands."

There had to be some sort of operational mechanism.

It's called magic, bro. Aedan has seen his fair share but he's not entirey familiar with how it works either. It still beats him trying to figure out the technology behind an iphone or something similar.

"A list of names I don't know."

And suddenly the glowing display projected into the air between them. I don't even know how this is supposed to work I going off of a suggestion here so let's roll with it.

"Anyone you recognize?"

Jim blinked at the display, impressed.

"Yes, actually," he said. "That's me." He pointed at his name. "This will let you communicate with anyone else who's here. For what it's worth--and I have found it useful, when it comes to finding work, housing, making connections."

"James Kirk," he read the name aloud so that he could commit it to memory. It sounded a little strange to him, but then that was sort of to be expected at this point given how foreign everything else in this place had been. It also reminded him that they hadn't actually introduced themselves yet.

"I'm Aedan Cousland." The display fades out and he tucks the pendant away. "I appreciate your help."
