Coming home from work, Jim was sunk deep in thought. The police force was his best chance at making this place better. So he'd always thought, despite his dissatisfaction with the results. But this wasn't the Federation--one couldn't assume peoples' goals were the same. Still, he had to try.

He almost missed the other man coming his was, but sidestepped him just in time.

"Excuse me," he said, and then noted that he looked more than a little out of place. Not that it was easy to tell, around here. "Were you looking for something?"

"You're welcome, Aedan Cousland," Jim said, holding out his hand out of habit. "I was new here once, too."

And too long ago.

Well, at least he knew what a handshake was. He's not completely inept here.

"How long have you been here now?" He was sort of dreading the answer, but it was becoming more and more clear to him that he had better make himself comfortable even as he searched for a way out.

"Almost a year." Jim accompanied that with a little grimace, clearly unhappy about that fact. "I haven't found any pattern in how long people stay, or why. But you're best bet, as far as I'm concerned, is plan for a long stay and be prepared not to."

"I was afraid that might be the case." The more you know~

"I do appreciate the help you've given me. If there's ever a chance I can repay you, don't hesitate to ask."

Jim smiled. "I will. And likewise--I don't keep score, and I work for the police department. Anything you need, just poke me." He gestured towards the amulet. "You know where to find me."
