Draco couldn't say he was overly into being at any kind of party, but he had a feeling that his absence - if noted at all - would have been used against him at some point in the future. So there he was, picking idly at the food like it was still rationed, and generally looking awkward as he watched everyone around him with a sort of vacant interest.

"I take it this isn't your first plate, then," he murmured, stifling the snigger that threatened to emerge in a cough.

"That's right. Wiltshire." Not that he expected her to know where that was.

"No, well, it's hard to know how much I've had. I keep refilling it before it's empty, so I dunno." She shrugged, not really bothered. Her stomach would tell her when she'd had enough.

Ruth really didn't have a clue where that was, but she nodded all the same. "My friends are from London. I've never been there myself, but always wanted to go."

"Well, I suppose you'll find out soon enough. " With a quick flick of his wand, Draco summoned a late over to his hand, carefully helping himself to small samples of whatever interested him.

"I'd tell you where to go to see the sights if you went, but I'm afraid I'd be positively useless in that regard."

Ruth gasped, as she hadn't seen anyone in the city do anything like that before. "Wow, that's amazing!" The rest of what he said flew over her head as she stared at his plate, wondering how he moved it.

"That's basic magic," he told her, unable to entirely hide his smug smirk as he paused in helping himself. "I take it you're unfamiliar."

"Magic," she repeated, feeling that term was sort of ridiculous. Paul had shown her his collective knowledge and experience, and it was all based in science. Even the "powers" Paul had were based in science. Maybe that was what this guy had too, only he called it something different.

"My friend can do certain kinds of magic, but I can't, no."

Only if saying rubbish words and flicking a wand could be backed up with science. "You sound sceptical," Draco drawled, looking her over with one brow raised. He wondered if it was one of the friends from London that could do the magic - why they couldn't do all kinds sprang to mind - or if it was someone else entirely.

"Oh no, just... well what he does I don't really see as magic, I just figured it's the name you used so I should too. He's not human, so he has these powers." After a moment's hesitated she asked, "Are you human? It's cool if you're not."

"Yes. I'm human," he replied, a hint of curiosity seeping into his tone, as if he was unsure of what else he might be, and what else her friend was. "So what's your friend, then? If not human."

"An alien," she replied. "I'm not sure what species, but he's from another planet." She paused to pick up a handful of cheese doodles. "I guess you haven't met him yet. He's trapped here too. His name's Paul."

"I've neither heard of nor seen him, no." And honestly, Draco didn't know that he'd recognise this Paul, even if he saw him after this conversation. 'Another planet' was fairly vague, as far as things went; 'an alien' even more so.

"I've no idea what aliens look like."

"Oh, well he looks like all the pictures of aliens we've seen over the years. Big head and eyes, gray skin, all that stuff. Maybe you'll meet him soon."

Bloody unlikely. At least if Draco had anything to say on the matter. "Perhaps," he drawled instead, not wanting to shoot down her dreams. "You do realise I've never seen these so-called pictures?" And doubtless they'd be boring anyway: Muggle photographs didn't move. How did that even work?

"You haven't? Oh, well, he doesn't look much different than how I described. He's short too, and swears a lot." She wasn't giving away much, but what could be said about Paul, really? He was the type you couldn't just describe; you had to experience him.

"Of course." As if her description were dead on, and he knew exactly whom she was speaking of. It was better to smile and nod sometimes, rather than just keep questioning.

"Dare I ask how you met him, then?"
