Thursday - the hospital rightawaydoctor August 11 2011, 15:40:36 UTC
Standing at the nurses's station in the ER, Christine erased several cases from the whiteboard. It was strange to her that a hospital that had computers wasn't yet listing cases up on a computer screen, but she supposed people in the 21st century had a hard time letting go of tried and true methods of doing things.

Noticing the man standing near a wall, just watching patients walk or being wheeled by, she wondered if he needed help.

"Are you hurt, sir?"

Startled out of his observations, Rory looked over, a bit lost. "Me? Oh, no. No. I'm just... watching."

"Just watching?" That seemed odd to her. Why would a guy come into the ER to watch injured people be whisked away behind closed doors or drawn curtains? It seemed a little fishy to her.

"Any particular reason why? The ER isn't really a theater."

He shook his head, sheepish. "Just glad it's here. I- Hi." He stuck out his hand, abruptly. "My names Rory Williams. Used to be a nurse."

She took his hand and gave it a firm shake. "Oh, I see. Used to be? Were you looking for a job here?" There was a part of her that really wished he was. They were slowly becoming fully staffed at the hospital, but Christine still had to cover more than one area sometimes. And while that wasn't necessarily a bad thing, since she had done similar aboard the Enterprise, she didn't have to traverse so many different floors and hallways that went on forever there.

"Oh, uh, no. I've been out of practice a long time, and I'm kind of working at the clinic in the Hostel, but I'm not really... up to speed yet." One hand gestured a bit, a little wildly. "Been working kind of primitive, for a long time."

"Oh, ok." She tried not to sound too disappointed at that. At least he was using his skills at a clinic. That would help him practice. "So I guess this hospital is a dream in comparison to working primitive, huh? Kinda funny, since this place is a little primitive against my standards."

"Yeah? Where- oh, I guess I should ask when are you from, right? I'm from two thousand... ten. By way of seventeen forty-five."

"A time traveler, huh?" Not that most things surprised her anymore. "You guys get around. I just met a Time Agent yesterday. As for me, I'm from 2259."

"Yeah? Don't think I've met a Time Agent."

"You probably will. He's named Jack Harkness. But enough about him." She waved a hand like she was waving the topic away. "What about you?"

"I kind of got... well, not stuck. But I stayed. In the past. Taking the long way back to my time."

She didn't quite understand what he meant by that. "The long way? You mean living through it? How old are you?"

rpondicus August 15 2011, 03:29:26 UTC
"Yeah. Um... old." He shrugged. He knew the number. He knew it to the day. But it wasn't good conversation.

"It's been a few... centuries, really. Since I was a nurse in a real hospital without leeches and rusty saws. So I want to catch up, first."

It took a moment before she could figure out what to say to that, but finally she chose the diplomatic approach instead of harping on about his age.

"Well the library has some good resources concerning 21st century medicine that might be useful to you. I studied them when I first got here."

"Yeah, I'll be going there. There's some other stuff I need to look up too... Don't you feel weird, working in a hospital that's gotta feel so backwards to you?"
