Draco had made a point of not seeking Ianto out that day; he had a feeling that there was a reason he hadn't known before Tosh said something that his birthday was that day. All the same, it wasn't terribly nice to totally ignore that little fact, when Draco was more than a little grateful for his boss' concern when he was 'ill', so to speak.

So he simply wandered outside of the basement when he thought that Ianto might be around, and was thankfully not proven wrong: he managed to catch a glimpse of the other man mid-day, and immediately set after catching up to him.

Every once and a while during the day, Ianto ventured downstairs to make coffee, or get himself something to eat when he remembered it. Upon finishing that, he had stopped by the library to check in with Remus and see how the library was faring after the raid, whether they'd taken any books as well as paperwork or not. He was just on his way back from the library, sighing to himself at the thought of going back to the work he had upstairs, when he spotted Draco headed towards him.

"Looking for me?" he asked, with a smile.

"One and the same," Draco replied pleasantly, looking far better than the last time he'd spoken with Ianto. It had all but niggled horribly at him that it was Ianto's birthday, and that he should say something - it wasn't entirely obligation though, considering Draco normally didn't even bother.

"Heard it was your birthday. I didn't get you anything, largely because I hadn't the slightest as to what you'd want, and the last thing anyone wants is useless rubbish that you'll never look at again." He was rambling. Draco cleared his throat, shrugged, and continued, "So happy birthday."

Ianto recognized that Draco was rambling, and smiled slightly at the realization. Usually it was him in Draco's position, after all, so he had an empathy for the other man in that moment. "Thank you," he said, flushing a little, because he really wasn't any good at this thing either. "And it's alright. That you didn't get me anything. Really, I... I'm not used to people making too much of a big deal about it, anyway, but. Thanks. For, ehm. Saying something, yeah?"

Draco forced a bit of a smile, awkward as it was; it was a bit of a relief that Ianto didn't care that he hadn't bought anything or made a giant deal out of it. He had no doubt that relief showed on his face and in his body language, shoulders falling out of their tension slightly. "It's the appropriate thing to do, I'd think. I'd hate it if people knew when my birthday was and never uttered a word."

Ianto smiled back at Draco, the pair of them awkward at each other but that was okay, because it didn't matter so much to either one of them either. "Well, I hope that people do speak up and give you good wishes on your birthday. I know I for one will remember and pay you the same courtesy in return."

"Tragically, it passed shortly after I actually arrived here," he drawled, chuckling lightly. There was something to be said for being awkward in hallways with your boss. It was almost like bonding, in a way. "But I do appreciate the thought either way."

Ianto smiled, nodding. "Ah. Well. Maybe next year, if you're still around, then. Only..." he added, with a quirk of a smile, "best not let anyone talkative know about it coming up. If you're like me and don't like to make a fuss, that is. You'd be amazed how many people have crawled out of the woodwork to wish me a happy day today."

"I should make sure Zero never finds out when it is, then." A snigger and a brief quirk of one brow in return. "I imagine that turn of events would lead to one of the most obnoxious birthday parties around."

Though perhaps that wouldn't be a bad thing. Draco looked thoughtful for a moment, rolling the idea over in his mind, then glanced back to Ianto. "Everyone, hm? From Hellsing, or just in general?"

"Everyone from Hellsing, as well as those on the outside. Honestly, I'm a little surprised by the turnout," he said, with another quirk of a smile, perhaps a little self-deprecatingly. "Who'd have thought that I was so popular..."

"Please," Draco drawled, rolling his eyes. "I see no reason why they shouldn't. It's not like you precisely...hide or anything. You run this place, after all."

Ianto shrugged, with a smile. "Maybe you're right. I'm not quite used to being the boss yet, not everything's sunken in, even after all this time."

"Well, for what it's worth - when it does sink in, I suppose - you're a rather good boss. Not at all uppity like some tend to be." Though Draco didn't precisely have a great access to tonnes and tonnes of bosses; working for people wasn't his forte. It was a wonder in and of itself that he was working for Hellsing at all.

Ianto smiled gratefully at the other at that comment. "It's worth quite a lot to hear that," he said, "thank you." He blushed, because compliments, like presents, were not something that he was always good at accepting. "I... Should probably stop keeping you from your work," he said, bashfully. "We've all got a lot to do now, thanks to current events and all."

It was a bit of a weight off Draco's chest, like now he could rest easy, having paid Ianto a compliment after the other man had helped him the week previous. He nodded lightly, shrugging, "Right. Back to work with both of us, I suppose. Don't overwork yourself, though. That's no way to spend a birthday."

Ianto shook his head. "Oh, no chance of that being my entire day. I've heard whispering of some plans to drag me out later today. But shhh," he said, smiling slightly at the other man, "you didn't hear that I know, yeah?"
