That evening... idolstolemylook August 22 2011, 21:50:08 UTC
"Hey, Buffy."

Spike jogged a bit, catching up.

"Look, before you say anythin', I'm sorry about the other day. Was a bad time, and I want you to know I've turned over a new leaf. I'm a new man, here on out. Just hope you'll give me that chance."

She turned to look at the man who was sidling up beside her. Buffy, he was using the name too.

Well, if three strangers were calling her that, it had to be her name. Three strangers wouldn't have all picked such a weird name as Buffy to be throwing at her.

She wasn't sure what this other person had done to her that he was apologizing for, but he seemed pretty apologetic. Well, maybe it was good that she didn't remember. Anger was an unhealthy emotion anyway, better to let it go.

She reached out and gave the man a little pat on the arm. "Um, sure! Don't worry about it. We're good." She gave him a smile and continued walking.

It took Spike a moment for his brain to catch up, and then tell his feet to start moving again.

"We're good?" he said. "That's all?" He shrugged, shutting his mouth, figuring he should just take it. "Uh, great then. Where're we goin'?"

Bonnie had said do something romantic. Like a date. A date without violence. Spike was still thinking.

Oh, the bleached man was still there. Well, he seemed pleasant enough and it sounded like they were friends or something. Anyway, some company might be nice.

"Oh, I'm just--"

Well, she was heading home, but she'd been so confused this morning that she'd sort of thrown on the first pair of clothes she'd seen and ran out the door. And now she couldn't quite remember where home was. But if this guy was her friend, he probably knew. It was a good way for her to get where she needed to go without admitting the problem to someone all over again.

"--I'm just going home," she decided. Flashed him a smile that she was pretty sure was charming. "Would you like to come along?"

Maybe she could just follow his lead. She was pleased with how sneaky she was being.

"Yeah," Spike said, grabbing his chance. "Yeah, I would."

Something seemed off. Spike, for all his posturing and ADHD, was fairly observant. But just what was wrong was both unclear and, frankly, kind of in his favor.

"Just down there, isn't it?" he said, pretty sure of the way. "No sign of Angelus, I take it." She'd moved to be safe, after all. Wouldn't do to lead the bastard to her.

She smiled, reached over and slipped her arm through his. That made it easier for her to let him lead the way, she decided. "I haven't seen Angelus," she said. Not that she knew what he looked like, but no one who had spoken to her today has used that name. She'd been paying attention, after Damon had warned her about him. "Just, um, Wesley and Damon and I don't think they're dangerous."

"So...you," she decided on, "What were you doing out here?"

Spike snorted. It distracted him from Buffy's arm in his, Buffy touching him of her own free will. Buffy acting... nice.

"Wesley's about as dangerous as a banana peel," he said. "An' Damon's a wanker. Anyway what do you mean what am I doing? Just... wandering. Like I do. You patrolling?"

Patrolling. Well. That made sense, what with the police station and all.

"Um." A pause. "Yeah, sure. Why not? And anyway, I think a banana peel could be dangerous--"

She looked very pensive when considering this possibility.

"--if you stepped on it and slipped and hit your head or something." Maybe that was what had happened to her! "You could lose your memory and wake up and not remember who you were. That would be a terrible thing to do to someone, if you were a banana peel."

"Don't think the banana peel's conscious of that, love," Spike said. "An' that's exactly what I meant--Wesley's dangerous if you trip on him, and likely to get in the way."

He looked over at her, treading carefully because Buffy was volatile and he didn't want to ruin anything.

"You okay, Buffy?"

"Who, me? Oh, yeah. Totally. Fine."

She frowned.

"Well, aside from me sort of coming onto Wes and him backing off. I don't get it? Am I ugly or something?" She looked down to examine herself. She had looked pretty enough in the mirror this morning, but maybe she'd missed something horrible, like a giant mole or a third breast.

Spike almost tripped over his own feet.

"You came on to Wesley?" he asked, fairly choking. Bloody hell, who hadn't, and why did nancy boy have all the luck? "What the hell does he have that I don't?"

The answers were both numerous and obvious, but it was his question just the same.

"And no, of course you're not ugly. You're perfect. Wesley's just a twat."

Oh dear, he looked upset. Had she completely misread the Wesley situation? This guy seemed surprised. More than surprised. Had she somehow hurt his feelings?

"Oh, I--um, thank you? And I didn't, well, I mean..."

She frowned.

"I'm sure he doesn't have anything that you--well, I mean, do you want me hitting on you?"

She was going to kill him. Either from shock or, whenever whatever she was on wore off, she'd stake him for even witnessing thing.

"Been more'n obvious how I feel about you," he said when he found his voice. He was convinced something was wrong, but how did you figure it out without possibly pissing her off and making her stop acting all sweet all of a sudden?

She looked up at him, confusion giving way to genuine curiosity. It was that terrible thing again. This man seemed so familiar, but she couldn't place him. It was like seeing someone from the office on the street and questioning whether you were really sure of who they were.

"Remind me?"

She was looking up at him with those big eyes, all... somehow innocent and trusting, suddenly. The way Buffy hadn't been in... Well, Spike wasn't sure if she ever had been. He looked down at her, lost for a moment, thinking it had to be a trick, something was very wrong and yet so right.

"Buffy... I love you. You know that. Would die for you. Know you'll never feel the same, but... Don't tease me, love. Couldn't bear watchin' you with Wesley, or... You might think I have no heart, but you do. Don't string me along."

Her gaze softened at that.

She wished she could say something in return, or at least remember who this man was. Remember something about their past. But there was nothing there, just one big white blank page.

She stopped walking, lightly touched his arm. "I certainly wasn't trying to tease you. I'm sorry, I just--I wasn't thinking." She gave his arm a little squeeze.
