Early on, somewhere near the Casa de Marauders

Jim had been very worried, seeing Sirius on the network. But he'd also been assured that Remus was coming for him. And in light of their recent relationship, Jim thought it best to give him--give them--some time before heading over. He felt guilty about his behavior, Sirius' appearance reminding him that his troubles were neither unique nor the most dire.

So a few days after he'd appeared, Jim walked over to Sirius' house. Assuming he'd be there, not yet ready to venture out. Not at all expecting to find Sirius approaching home from the other direction.

"Sirius?" Jim walked up briskly, concern in his eyes.

Sirius paused when he saw Jim, startled to see him -- he hadn't actually expected him to visit. When Jim walked up to him, he reached out for his hand, needing to feel that he was really there. He knew he wasn't dreaming, but it had been so long.

"Jim...it's good to see you again," he murmured.

Jim took his hand--but stepped forward to make it a hug. Sirius had looked terrible, and whatever was between them, whatever Jim was going through, he still cared.

"What happened?" he said softly.

Sirius clung to him tightly, just basking in the warmth of it for a moment before replying.

"I was sent back," he explained. "To Azkaban. For nine more years, but then I escaped...I'm on the run now."

"Oh my god," Jim said. Nine years. Nine years. He couldn't even imagine... He swallowed. "Not anymore," he said, stepping back but keeping a hand on Sirius' arm. He did look older. Worn. And far too thin. "I was coming to visit. I... didn't think you'd be out. Should I come back another time?"

Sirius shook his head. "Please, stay. I've just been wandering around a bit, getting some fresh air," he explained. "I don't like...being cooped up inside."

"No," Jim said with a nod. "Of course not. We could walk. Whatever you want."

"I'd like that," Sirius replied, smiling a bit. He looked less worn, when he smiled. "I think I offered to take you out for a motorbike ride, before I left...not really in the best shape for it, though."

Jim shook his head, and moved next to Sirius so they could continue. "Not really conducive to talking, either," he said. "And there's something I wanted to say. The other--"

He cut off, glancing with alarm at Sirius, suddenly realizing it wasn't the other day. Nine years ago, Jim had made a fool of himself.

"Well. Last time I saw you, I didn't behave in a manner I'm proud of. And I'm sorry. I'm sure you hardly remember, and it's not important now, but... I wanted to apologize."

"I remember," Sirius said quietly. He walked without a real direction in mind, just wandering. "Thank you, for apologizing. I remember how much you meant to me, Jim. And that all I wanted was to help you."

Jim sighed, shoving his hands into his pockets. It was almost worse, that Sirius remembered. If it had made that sort of impression...

"I know it sounds silly now," he said. "In comparison to what you..." He swallowed. "Uhura was one of the last people left who I hadn't broken things with. Losing her... I don't know. I think it broke me." He shook his head. "But I'm not here to talk about me. I know you wanted to help. And I hope you'll forgive me."

"I do," Sirius reassured him. "And trust me, I understand how that feels. But don't worry about your problems being any more or less significant than mine, Jim.

When I was there...none of this was real to me. It was like a dream, that I'd mostly forgotten. But when I came back, I started to remember. So in a way, it's still like it was yesterday."

Jim's expression turned uncertain. "Sounds like the worst of both worlds," he said. "Is there anything I can do?"

"Just...having you here is enough. Not being by myself." He paused. "Remus probably needs some support, too...I mean, he's got the other me, but I don't think he's very good at that sort of thing." His self had his own issues.

"Of course," Jim said. "That's why I'm here." For Sirius, he meant, but... "You and Remus... is something wrong?"

Sirius frowned. "I don't know. I remember before, when the other me showed up...he said he'd been with Remus for years, in his own world...when I hadn't. So I told Remus he could see him, if I could see other people too."
