"Sir," Draco began as he neared Snape, sidling up from one side. He was, perhaps, pointedly refusing to look at the other man for very obvious reasons. "Why are you wearing that?"

Of course it would be Draco who'd come to this party, who'd recognize him like this. Really, Snape was only wearing it on the off-chance Sirius Black would show, in order to pick a fight with the other man. But a childish answer like that was unbecoming.

"I was forced into donning a costume." He murmured under the mask. "And while it is in poor taste, it is achieving the desired effect of being left alone."

But he removed the mask, for Draco's sake, and held it off to the side.

His eyes remained on the mask all the same - he never got one, though that was probably for the best; there was only so much of a lack of humanity he could deal with when it came to the Mark on his arm - even as he nodded his appreciation that Snape had removed it.

"Should I assume you'd rather be left alone, in that case?"

Snape watched the increasing amount of uneasiness that lifted once he'd removed the mask, and took note of it in the back of his mind. Draco was still in many ways an enigma to him.

"I would rather you do whatever you like." Evasive conversational maneuvers, perhaps, but Snape was not so far gone as to encourage people to spend time with him. It might catch on as a trend.

Doubtless Draco remained an enigma to most; he was still unaccustomed to discussing any kind of feeling with anyone, even his own boyfriend. It did tend to pose a problem or two. He opened his mouth to reply to Snape, rethinking his wording, and shrugged. "Certainly the first time I think I've ever heard you say that, sir."

"A first time for everything, Mr. Malfoy." came the neutral reply without a hint of a change in expression, as Snape continued to survey the room.

"Are you here alone?"

"Of course not," he mused plainly, glancing away from Snape to survey the room himself. There were almost more people he didn't know here than there had been at the Gala earlier that month. "I wouldn't be here if I were."

"You realize occasions like these are the perfect place to build connections." It was an innocent statement to make, with a considerable amount of weight to it.

"I have connections, sir. Or were you suggesting I befriend those who put stock in crystals?" He cast a sceptical glance towards Snape, eyebrows raised slightly.

A slight smirk met Draco's skeptical gaze, the first Snape had made all day.

"Certainly not. Continue as you were."

Draco would be flattered that he was the first to receive something more than Snape's usual bland stare, but he was far too busy being fascinated by the wall behind him; the blond blinked out of the brief trance, shrugging. "I will, in that case; however, if I were to form new connections, who would you recommend? If anyone?"

"I will refrain from recommendation for now; many of my own associates I still do not trust." Never mind the fact that Snape did not trust anyone at all. But he could tell Draco's attention was waning, and thus waved him on.

"Go, then; I won't keep you."

Less waning, and more that it wasn't there at all. He'd been oddly distracted all week. The blond nodded slowly, idly, before glancing back to Snape. "I'll keep that in mind for when I'm mingling."

Another moment of distractedly glancing around, just past Snape, and he gave another acknowledging nod, shifting his weight almost awkwardly between his feet. "Until later, sir."

Giving Draco a brief nod, Snape returned to surveying the room in front. It wasn't to say that he wouldn't be keeping a close watch on his young student as the night wore on.
