Random bar! alphaophiuchi November 20 2011, 05:55:40 UTC
Something about that night begged him to give Zero some space - for the first time that week, however reluctantly it had happened - and actually get some air. 'Some air' apparently translated to 'a drink', and Draco's feet led him to the nearest bar he recognised; it wasn't a huge place, but small and quaint and about as welcoming as anything in Bete Noire was.

That said, its size did lend itself rather nicely to being able to glance around and spy Ianto with limited difficulty. He hadn't been expecting to see anyone there he knew - the glance around was cursory, just to make absolutely sure that he wasn't in the wrong place; seeing his boss, of all people, was an unspoken invitation if anything was.

So that was how Draco found himself standing beside Ianto, wondering if he should say something or just keep standing there awkwardly.

Taking another long sip of his own drink, he found himself staring at Ianto thoughtfully. In a way, he had a point - even back home, he only cared when it was things close to him that were threatened. His parents, mostly.

"Clearly the best option is to care less, then," he mumbled wryly, offering a weak laugh - some suggestion that perhaps he was kidding. Even if he wasn't.

"No," Ianto countered, with a shake of his head, "that's not what I said." He played with the glass in front of him, before looking to Draco. "You just have to learn that not every obstacle you come across will screw you over." Which Ianto realized was easier said than done, especially for people like himself, but. He was drunk, and facts like that didn't matter to him at the moment.

He opened his mouth to reply - some bitter retort that would probably do more harm than good - and found that there was none. He didn't want to care less; he was quite content having friends for once. So Draco merely pressed his lips back together, brow furrowed as he regarded his boss. "You know you're pissed and still giving me life lessons, correct? There's something severely wrong with this picture."

"Yeah, well," Ianto said, with a shrug, going to take a drink and narrowly missing spilling his drink on himself as it to prove his point. "I guess... I guess that that's just me, then, isn't it? Never stop thinking, even when I'm pissed."

Draco's wand was at the ready in case he did accidentally spill anything, though set aside; it wasn't a duel, after all. He didn't need to be ready to hex anyone. He took a slow sip of his own drink, offering a vague chuckle. "I can't help but imagine what might happen if you did stop thinking. Might be quite the experiment."

Ianto shook his head, taking another sip of his drink. "If I did, I suspect that the organization would go to shit," he said, bluntly. "There's a reason I don't usually go out on a bender. I'm going to be useless in the morning. You'll be lucky if you see me in tomorrow at all. I'm taking enough of a risk as it is, leaving everything in Owen's hands tomorrow."

A smirk couldn't help but curve at his lips, but he stifled it after a moment. "No, you're right about that. I've a feeling there's a thing or two that will go unheeded without you. Though I suppose you could also get me to do anything you truly worried about." It wasn't as if he was doing that much otherwise.

Ianto shrugged. "I can't think of anything specific right now, but I suspect that has something to do with the fact that I am pretty fantastically pissed already," he said bluntly. "You should've asked me about that a few hours ago, I might've had an answer for you." There, humor. Things couldn't be too bad if he was joking around.

Draco managed a quiet laugh - laughter was supposedly the best medicine, and though he'd never seen it in practice, he couldn't doubt the old wives' tale. There was usually something to them. "Perhaps. Except I was holed up in my flat, hoping that leaving the house today wouldn't lead to some travesty befalling everyone I know. You know, maybe I ought to get pissed with you."

Ianto shrugged in response. "You could. Just don't expect me to be the responsible one and see you get home alright. I'm a little bit beyond that point already, and I'm not exactly planning on stopping now, either."

"I can get home just fine. Apparition is a beautiful thing." And besides, he could always ring Zero to come get him anyway. "Just keep going. It'll probably make you feel better. I did that when I first got here."

He raised his hand up for yet another round.

"It's still cheating," Ianto said, not really complaining but more stating a fact. "How you can just magic around like that. I have to end up stumbling around, piss drunk, and either pass out in a gutter somewhere or catch a cab home, and you. You just wave your wand and presto! You're where you want to be."

"Unless I've never been there, or I'm unable to focus. Then I probably end up in three different pieces. At least passing out in a gutter doesn't involve dismemberment," Draco mused aloud, running his fingertips along his glass.

"Not if you don't have really shit luck," Ianto agreed with a nod. "It's still not exactly fair, though. I mean. Magic. It's not like I can learn how to do it or anything. You either have it or you don't, and as far as I know, I have many talents, but waving about a wand and making things happen is not one of them, I don't think."

"Probably not. You'd know by now. You'd probably have exploded a thing or two as a child, or accidentally levitated yourself." Of course, he had been raised knowing he'd be magical, and to expect everything when it happened. It was a bit like a baby taking his first steps that way.

Of course, there was no accounting for the whole different worlds bit.
