Now that the Curse of Babel fruit has worn off, Aïs has taken a delight in pretty much everything. Reading books in the library, exploring, going into all the stores he comes across... Anything that involves learning more about the strange place he's in now. Cooking is something he has especially taken an interest in, thanks to his stumbling upon a recipe book in the library. He'd never encountered these foods, these strange powders, these bottles. He wanted to try it out, and he quickly discovered that not only does he get a chance to try out new and interesting foods, but he's good at it.

Saïx's cooking skills are apparently innate. Who knew?

Aïs is currently wrestling with pizza dough while Senaya sits on the corner of the counter in the form of a domestic cat. Her tail is swishing in an amused fashion as he grumbles under his breath.

When Chris came into the kitchen, he didn't exactly expect to see Aïs there. Oh, he knew the kid was staying in the house, but he had never really done any more than just cross paths before getting back to whatever it was he had been doing at the time. "Hey," he greeted, quirking an intrigued and somewhat amused brow at Aïs' struggle with the pizza dough. "You all right there?" (The greetings were automatic; he didn't know whether the kid could communicate or not, but maybe at least something would be gleaned from his tone.)

Etana was on his heels, attention quickly taken up by the dæmon on the counter. She hopped up once Chris was close enough and sat nearby Senaya, an automatic reaction to stay closer to her kin than Chris's.

At the sound of footsteps, Senaya's ears perk and she looks towards the doorway. Aïs continues fighting with the dough until a familiar voice speaks, and then he looks up and blinks. At seeing Chris, he smiles his greeting.

"Yes, I am fine," he replies. He could explain what happened there with the languages, but, well. What would be the fun in that? He can explain afterwards.

Senaya looks at Etana and flicks her tail in her own greeting.

Chris paused, clearly surprised. "That was English," he said, confused and semi-accusatory. "You speak English?" So what was that whole conversation over the network about, then?

Etana nodded in response to Senaya and laid down to match her. She had tilted her head at the greeting from Aïs, but remained quiet. Chris was already on the same track she was; no need to double-team the kid.

"No," Aïs answers lightly. "I speak the tongue of my people. You hear English. I think. This city is strange." He'd be lying, though, if Chris' tone didn't amuse him.

Senaya likes being a cat. It's comfortable. And she can get away with paying very close attention to everything while pretending to be half-asleep.

"Right... Because that whole-" Chris trailed off, waving his hand vaguely. "But you weren't understandable before. What happened?"

"Something wrong with a fox form?" asked Etana in a murmur, so as to not interrupt the humans. She would be lying to say she wasn't interested in the concept of a dæmon being able to change around at will.

"I do not know." Aïs shrugs now. "I hear that the fruit of the island causes strange things. I had more than one kind. Perhaps that was the cause."

Senaya curls her tail around her body to rest on her front paws. "Of course not," she answers. "Something wrong with a cat form?"

"Yeah, like the star fruit," Chris agreed quietly. Maybe he would need to get out there and take a better look at what the island had to offer - carefully, of course.

Etana chuckled, head inclined to acquiesce that point. "I'll admit to having a bias against them."

"Yes, like the star fruit," Aïs confirms. He frowns at the pizza dough. He can't seem to get it to the proper consistency, but he decides he's done fighting with it. He shrugs and moves on to the next step. "What do you think of this place?"

Senaya closes her eyes for a moment in the self-satisfied way that cats have, her cheeks puffed and mouth curved into a feline smile. "Foxes are good. We like how it feels to be a fox. But for now, we are a cat."

"Depends on what you mean by this place," Chris answered, watching the struggle with the pizza dough. "You know, there are easier things you could make to start with."

Etana glanced between Senaya and Aïs. "'We'?" she questioned.

"This town -- no, city. City is the word." His accent returns with the word city. Aïs looks up, confused for a moment before he realizes Chris is looking at the dough. "Ah. I have all ready made other things. This is not the start."

"We," Senaya confirms. "Does it not feel like that? When he feels certain things, I feel like a cat. When he feels other things, I feel like a fox. Does yours feel like a fox all the time? Is that why you do not change?"

"Oh, the city?" Chris gave it some thought, then shrugged. "It's definitely no San Francisco, but it's not unlivable. Just... unpredictable. What other things have you tried?"

"I don't know," Etana replied, faintly bemused. "He feels like himself. I'm just... always a fox."

San Fran... sisko... Well, anyway. "I have made sandwiches, pancakes, cake, ah... donuts and cookies..." This explains all the random food that's been lying out in the kitchen.

"How strange," comments Senaya, flicking her tail. "I wonder why you do not change." It is the most natural thing in the world to her.

"Cooking a pizza is a bit of a step up from baking," Chris said, lips quirked in amusement. "It's the dough, I think. Everything else is just the toppings."

"We read something about dæmons that change," Etana mused quietly. "Finding more information isn't easy, though."

"It sounded interesting," Aïs gives a half-shrug. There's a spark of something in his eyes. "And a challenge."

At that, Senaya's ears prick. "And what did you read? Where?"
