Have you made any progress with your project?

[She really wishes she could ask something more specific, or offer something useful, but she'll take what information she's been given and run with it. She's used to chipping away until he's ready to share.]

I haven't had the opportunity to return to the warehouse since the malfunction.

[It's a long way to limp. Now, just give him a few moments here.]

This body requires sustenance more often than I am used to. Perhaps you would be willing to accompany me in the search for an evening meal.

[She is smiling now. It's obvious in her voice.]

I would love to. Should I come to you?

I can meet you at the mansion later this evening.

[Because living at the House means that he's fed to the brim far too often. He's going to have to learn to say no to it for the rest of the day first.]

[She's not really surprised that he still won't tell her where he is, but she had to at least try.]

I'll be here.

[Even now, with some slight sense of the city and understanding of how it works, she doesn't really have any place else to be. She's still a puzzle piece that doesn't quite fit.]

Spock?

[Her voice is soft, and once she's said his name she finds that she's not sure how to continue, so her pause drags on until it's no longer just a pause. The rest of her question gets stuck.]

[It's the tone that has him pausing in return for a few moments.]

Is something wrong?

[Of all the times she would have loved for him to ask that question, now is definitely not one of them. Not when she wants to be someone strong enough for him to count on.]

What can I do to help you?

[She's not asking simply about his project, or his injuries, or even his current state of humanity. She doesn't want to know what she can do for the problems, she wants to know what she can do for him. The last time she asked him a question like this, he requested that she continue to perform admirably, and then shut her out. She has no job to do here, no function to fulfill, nothing to perform admirably.

She's asking what he needs from her, because she'll give him anything she has that will make it even the tiniest bit better.]

I have already spoken with Mister Scott regarding the project. While your offer is appreciated, it is not required at this time.

[Pause pause. It's so much easier sticking with simple facts like that. Except-]

Have you encountered any further...difficulties since your arrival?

[Sometimes dating an emotionally retarded Vulcan kind of sucks. Lucky for him he's brilliant and cute.]

A few.

[He probably wouldn't believe her if she said no, and she doesn't want to lie to him. She also doesn't want to make him feel bad, or worse. He shouldn't have to worry about her.]

But I met the man who owns this house. He's been very kind and very helpful.

Delta.

[Not that he's ever spoken to the man personally. But he knows of him, and he trusts Jim's judgment of him. He wouldn't have stayed at the mansion otherwise.]

I am grateful that he has been capable of assisting you.

So am I.

[There are other things she can tell him. Things that will make it seem like she's acclimating, and she has every intention of faking it until she makes it.]

I'm learning the layout of the city and working on finding a job.

I went for a drink with the new Jim...

Or, I suppose he's the old Jim, isn't he? It's so surreal, actually seeing him.

I'll tell you all about it when you get here.

[She'll talk so he doesn't have to, and maybe if he wants to she'll get another piece of the picture. Even if he doesn't, a one-sided conversation is slightly better than talking to herself.]

Is six too early?

[He just stays silent the entire time, listening. Though it may not be her intention, her attempt at filling the silence seems almost like nervousness to him. But it's a point he isn't going to make. She's still in her adjustment period.]

If that is when you would prefer.

Yes. So I'll see you at six.

[She is nervous, but she doesn't want to be. The sooner she figures out her place in all this, the sooner she can start feeling like herself again.]

[Not that she can see it, but he nods his head automatically at that.]

Until then.

[There's a pause, and then he's disconnecting.]

[Uhura takes out her earpiece and sets it down on the dresser.]

Be careful.

[It's easier to say things like that to the empty air.

She sits for a while, and then she talks herself out of the chair and goes to do something productive.

But at ten to six she's near the main doors to the house, sitting on a step near the bottom of the staircase and waiting, working on the small tablet computer that appeared on her pillow a few days ago.]

[Having gotten himself checked over by McCoy already, his wounds having been redressed, there's that added support that makes it that much easier for him to reach the mansion in time. He doesn't bother knocking; still having a room under his name in the building means he has no need to. Even if it's a room currently being occupied by someone else.

He leaves the door open, standing only a few steps inside and focusing on Uhura with the faintest trace of a smile on his face.]

I apologize if I have kept you waiting.
