[Yes, he heard the message.]

[And yes, he's ignoring it. You're probably going to have to come find him.]

[Lucky for Lance, whenever he happens to head up to the sixth floor, the Doctor will just happen to be in his room. =3]

....Sounds familiar. [Though probably not for the reason Lance thinks it does.]

Right. So, hard way. [Turned toward 'Sefton' and not the light, he reaches up and taps the panel that houses the light's wiring.] I'd take this off, take a look at the wiring, strip the problem and replace the wire. It's probably the wire that's the problem. Or one of the connector bits, but that's just a question of swapping it out. Or - easy way.

[Without even looking toward the light, he holds the sonic up to it. The sonic buzzes for a second, and the light flickers a bit more before starting to shine bright and steady. Then the Doctor finally turns and looks at it.]

That'll hold it for a while. Though the hard way's just as good, possibly better.

So do it the hard way, then.

[ He just leans back against the wall, arms crossed. Yep, he's fully prepared to watch you go through it step by step, Doctor. While making conversation. His interest is piqued; people knowing about pocketing isn't exactly common. ]

What sorts've things d'you use pocketing for?

[Alright, hard way it is. He tries to do a cool thing by hitting the panel with the side of his fist to make it fall open... but nothing happens. Ah well. He starts working to pry it open.]

Time Lords used it for transport, mostly. Small spaceship, big insides. Take the larger dimension and insert it into the smaller structure. Leaves you a lot of room to stretch your legs.

[With one last good tug, the panel comes off - but with a little too much force. He stumbles a little as the force he was exerting on the panel pushes him backward. Uncool. But he still grins, with a curious glint in his eye.]

What do you use it for?

[And yes, he's looking at you a bit like he would an ant who just recited the alphabet. No offense.]

You can pocket a whole spaceship's insides?

[ Okay, now that's impressive. He watches, an amused smile flickering at the corners of his mouth, before he shakes his head in response to that question. ]

Not me. Someone I know. S' got ... this bag. Can put lots of stuff in it, but only things made a certain way. And ... he can pocket dragons. Something 'bout their basic makeup.

[ He shrugs. ]

Can't make the pocket-space very big, though. Not bigger than individual ... well, pockets.

[He's already poking around at the wires, using the sonic to sniff out the bad one. Over his shoulder:] Not called Peylix, is he? Nevermind, don't answer that. Wait - no - do. If he were poking around, I ought to know...

[ A blink. ]

No. S' name's ... Wataru. Calls himself Lance a lot though. Owns the animal shelter.

[ It is really strange talking about himself in the third-person, so he changes the subject, curiously: ]

Who's Peylix?

Big, bad nasty man. Hope he never shows up. Also calls himself Omega.

He basically invented the technology that allowed Time Lords to travel in time and space. Already presumed dead for a long while by the time I came along. Unfortunately was not dead, but in fact, absolutely raving insane.

...He ought to be actually dead by now, but clearly that's never stopped anyone from getting here. I was just wondering.

You can actually do that? Travel in time?

[ Since he's met Jim the whole space thing isn't such a big shocker. ]

Yup! Entirely possible. Not the simplest thing to engineer, but it is possible.

[He's fiddling about with bits of wire now. Luckily he had some scraps left in his pockets from building the scanner.]

V' heard of it, but ... dunno of anyone who's actually managed it. Except Bete Noire.

[ A beat. ]

What's that spanner thing you're using?

This? [Gestures with the sonic.] Sonic screwdriver. Handy little gizmo. Never leave home without it.

[He holds the sonic in his teeth as he works on the wires with his hands for a minute, then gives them one last shot with the screwdriver. The light gives a feeble little flicker, then is solid again. The Doctor stoops to pick up the panel.]

There. No problem. Bingo.

What's it do? 'Sides everything?

[ He peers at the wires and then up at the lights, and then nods. ]

Okay. You're hired, then.

Excellent. [Quickly but carefully, he places the panel back in place.]

As for the sonic - everything's a bit of a stretch, but not much of one. ...It doesn't do wood.

[ ... Well. Okay then. ]

So it uses sound to do things?

Find the right frequency setting, you can do just about anything.
