[This is... not at all what he expected and for a moment, Jim isn't sure if Jim's serious or not. But his look and his voice are serious, and it seems there's more going on here than meets the eye.]
No, it's not private or anything. [He looks away from the screen, recalling the memory.] Uh. D'you want the full story, or is just the bit where he told me about how he got there what you're after?
[He is serious. Calm and a little sad, keeping the need out of his voice only be force of will.]
Spock--your Spock--showed me a little. But what I want to know from you is... How he felt. What he thought. What you saw, about me and him.
[He feels foolish, like a schoolboy passing notes, but it's the only way he can know anything. The only way Spock can call back to him and let him know why he left.]

[Another pause as he tries to figure out where to start. He doesn't want to leave anything out, in case it's important to Jim.]
He knew who I was soon as he looked at me. I'd just run into a cave on Delta Vega, chased by this giant thing after being marooned and there he was. He turned to me, tilted his head and asked how I'd found him. Then he said [A pause as Jim tries to remember the exact wording and inflection.] 'I have been, and always shall be your friend.'
I thought he must've been some kind of senile Vulcan hermit. [He laughs.] Even when he told me he was Spock, I couldn't take him seriously.
[Jim nods, his eyes strangely intense. Like this does mean something important, despite the fact that given Spock's words, his confirmation of friendship shouldn't be all that shocking or interesting.]

[Jim nods. Reading Spock is a challenge, and reading the older Spock hadn't been easy either, but-] I think he almost expected me to recognize him like he did me. When I didn't that's what he said.
What does it mean? [Because clearly it meant a lot to Spock.]

He kept calling me 'old friend,' telling me how good it was to see me again. I think he was pretty surprised to find I wasn't the Captain. [He pauses, wishing he could remember more of the conversation they'd had as they went back to Spock's small camp.] At the time I was too busy trying to think of a way back onto the Enterprise to pay too much attention.
Then he mentioned Nero and suggested that a mind meld would be the easiest way to fill me in on everything. [Even now the memory of that makes him pause.] He didn't even ask, I think. Just... went ahead as though it was the most normal thing.
[That surprises him, a little. Jim is used to Spock being a little more scrupulous. Still, part of him can't help but think about a Spock who hasn't seen him in... no, he doesn't want to think about that.]
A breech of etiquette, but... What was it like?
[He fears he might be pushing too hard. But he can't help it.]

No, I don't have the right to demand, I'm sorry. When Spock touched you, in the cave. I want to know what you saw. What he told you.
[There's something slightly desperate about his request, though it's banked and hardly the panic of weeks before. Just a deep-seated ache.]
If it's private, I understand that. But if you can... I want to know.

[He feels a little helpless, in fact. Lost. Because that's not the Spock who left.]
What else?
