Emergency crochet to the rescue!

I'm doing spotlights for Amber's show, and you're supposed to bring a heat-proof glove because those lights get hot enough to burn you. One of the other spots people showed us a scar from a previous show. Despite having reminded myself 3 times during the day not to forget, I forgot my gloves in the house and didn't remember until just after we'd ( Read more... )

Nicely saved! :) Looks like you've got yourself a spare oven mitt now, too.

That's awesome! There's something MacGyver-esque about being able to solve a problem from scratch in just half an hour.

(I like the backdrop, too. :) )

Hehe. When I took the picture, at first I was in my kitchen, then I thought, "this is gross, I should look for a better background." You were definitely in my thoughts when I picked this as the cleanest part of my house at the moment.

Wow, that was pretty damn fast crocheting, especially since it wasn't the simplest structure.

I started from the sleeve with something that would just barely fit over my wrist because I knew it would expand a little as I worked, then I increased 3 stitches/row until it was wide enough for the thumb and hand, then I just pinched off a place for the thumb hole and stitched straight across. I finished up the tube for the fingers, then added on a tube for the thumb. It worked out better than I thought it would. It fits really well, because I tested it along the way. I've never done something like that from scratch before. This yarn is super-thick and easy to work with.

Very nice fast work! One drawback of preferring to work in fine yarns is that solving something like this in half an hour is pretty laughable; your skills served you very well there. I've actually never made a glove or mitten before.

I never made anything other than a blanket before this, so I was making it up as I went along. I love working in big, thick, yarn though, because I see results so quickly. Maybe someday I'll go to the finer yarns, but I'm currently still in product-over-process mode and I'm worried that if my product takes too many hours to complete, it will never get worked on.
