And it all comes crashing down...

I had a rather frustrating moment of clarity at work today. One of the girls that I work with was talking with me upstairs in the library and I realized that college students are getting significantly fake. Like really, really fake. No actual opinions of their own, and those that do have opinions are rather poorly informed if they are informed ( Read more... )

College kids haven't changed, you have. They've always been that vapid, ill-informed and influenced by their parents and other sources, and once you probably were too, but to a lesser extent as you were not born a complete tool like the majority of people around our age. The biggest problem is that in America we've made this great decision to send EVERYONE to university, so there's no real selective process for who gets an education except for money. There's this fake sense of having to have ability to get in, you know the SATs and that kind of thing but the bottom line is EVERYONE GOES TO COLLEGE. Or at least the vast majority, and it brings down the standards. That's why a college degree is as useless as a high school degree now and going to grad school doesn't guarantee you'll make enough money to pay off your loans. Debt is the new form of slavery and secondary education is one of the ways our government ensures that we all succumb to it ( ... )

The other side of the coin is that our society (western society not just America) has all the tell tale signs of a society on the verge of toppling. Everyone goes to college, everyone has everything they want, even "poor students." The way we treat things in this generation was unheard of two generations ago when they had nothing and they were willing to sacrifice even that for what they believed in (now of course they were being a bit blind-sided by propaganda, but whatever). You're right, it is spiraling out of control. And there's nothing you can do about it, unfortunately it is the natural course of history. But don't worry too much about it, either the bees will die, global warming will catch up with us, or we will run out of oil before that happens. One of these things is likely to occur within our lifetime or shortly after, then we won't have to worry about ANY of that other stuff. People living in huts in Africa will have the last laugh then, won't they ( ... )

I totally agree with you. There is something fundamentally flawed with the way that the whole college thing works in America. There is nothing wrong with people who go into trade. They are no dumber for doing so. Actually sometimes they are smarter for doing so. It just happens that they have a different form of intelligence. I mean there are several types, not everyone learns well from books. Actually, I really believe that most people are not really 'book smart' and that's really what you need in order to not drop the full grade that most kids drop in scores in college ( ... )

Welcome to life.
