Do you guys have favorite essays? Any era or topic (but especially: Arts, Activism, History, Politics, Pop Culture or Science).

Online links or enough of a citation (author/title, at least) so I can track it down, please!

Thanks in advance. :)

If TED talks are okay, I have a list of some of my favorites here. (Looking at it now, I'd probably put the Adichie piece at #1 rather than the Abani.) Hasn't been updated lately--the signal-to-noise got too low around 2010 and I stopped watching the talks regularly. You might also like VS Ramachandran's talk on mirror neurons (which has some great storytelling as well as interesting science--9 mins) and the (scary) medical talks by Ben Goldacre and Brian Goldman.

I remember being quite fond of Orwell's Shooting an Elephant in high school.

One of the most emotionally difficult pieces I've ever read, but excellent: Fatal Distraction, telling the story of children who die after being left in hot cars--and of their parents.
