Buffy cast a frantic look at him, standing to move to his side. He stood as impassive as ever, his expression stoic. "But where will you go? I mean, I know you're an angel and you live up in Heaven or wherever, but you'll come back, won't you? This can't be forever."
"I'll go Home. My brothers are waiting. I have been on Earth far longer than expected. There are things to attend to in the garrison." He turned his back on her, pride and duty sitting high on his shoulders.
She made one last, desperate grab at his arm. "Wait. What about me? Isn't there- Wasn't there- Don't you…" she trailed off, unable to finish the thought. She wanted to mean something to him. She wanted to be more than the Earth-girl that sometimes made him smile. She wanted to know that she meant half as much to him as he did to her.
He stood still, focusing his gaze on the wall in front of him. A heavy weight settled in his chest and threatened to make him crumble. It wasn't a feeling angels were supposed to be familiar with. Being on Earth made him weak. He had been warned of as much. He inhaled, letting his eyes close. He didn't want to hurt her, but there was no other way. Chances were slim he would see her again.
"You?" he began, facing her one final time, "You will remain."
He stepped back from her grip. In a flutter of wings, he was gone from her life.
