Another reason why I suck eggs

I am a musical old fart. It took me a surprising amount of time to realize this, but it's true. I feel like I'll never discover a great new band ever. This is such a familiar feeling. I read somewhere that if we don't work at it, our musical tastes tend to freeze around age 35, so you're not more of an old fart than most people. Reading that weirded me out enough that I decided to deliberately force myself out of my comfort range to combat the hardening of my musical arteries. MP3 blogs, new music samplers at record stores, YouTube, any place I can listen to new music comfortably. It's still tough even with the convenience of electronic media. If you're listening to Franz Ferdinand and the Scissor Sisters you're further out on the edge than a *lot* of people.

It doesn't seem as easy to discover new music as it used to be, but maybe there just isn't as much good stuff to find out about. I don't know. I really don't know anything about actually NEW bands, but I'm willing to bet there are some older ones I could still get into.

Neat that you mentioned this-- there actually was a great Poptimist column that talked about what the author did when he got in the exact same musical rut:

Aww, it's interesting, but it sounds so hard. I just like people telling me, "if you like this, then check out this," you know?
