at least you can remember your birthdays. after a childhood of emotional holidays, i stopped celebrating and for the most part have forgotten things that should be remembered. my wedding was performed at courthouse in a sundress and i can't remember the last birthday i actually did anything other than eat dinner, which is not exactly an uncommon occurrence. i spent the past month stomping my feet and asking the universe why i have to attend my phd graduation. i think the reason that i run from celebrations is that i do not think i deserve these things. if you don't like weddings, fine, don't have one. but if any parts of you feels that you are not worthy, you should kick it in the face. what you and kayla have together is important and you should acknowledge that. whatever you choose for your wedding or your birthday is the right choice. but it is important to make a choice so the day does not pass by you like any other day.
We didn't get married, for various reasons, and 25 years on are still very happily together. Photographs, cats, clearing - Check. What we did do was have a kick-ass party for our big anniversary: Just as valid.
Last night, we were at the very excellent celebration party for a couple who married about 6 months ago. There are things to be said for completely separating the two!
(Sometimes I don't know what to say, but I like to leave some love where I have read, especially when it is such a beautiful, honest, well-written and touching post.)
